The bad news is that all trucks struggle in the Rockies with a load. Even the diesels slow down, but not as much as the gassers. I've driven up and down through Eisenhower Tunnel enough times to know there is little you can do to maintain speed.
I've got a 1997 F350 DRW with the 7.5L (Banks...
Lots of question in your post. The used TC market is plentiful in the states but you will need a truck before you can take delivery on a used TC. I'm a Ford man but Chevy and Dodge make good trucks, too. Depending on the weight of a TC you can't go wrong with a DRW 1-ton 4x4 truck, otherwise...
I may have these hoop style mirrors since mine is a 97. What slide adapters are you referring to? I'm very interested. Are these what you are calling hoop style?

Yep. I agree. You are a little over on your rear axle. 7,380 - 6,830 = 550 lbs overweight. My 1997 F350 rear axle capacity is 7,400 but my GAWR for the rear is only 7,000 lbs. Fully loaded with my camper, my rear axle weighs 6,580 lbs.
Subscribed.
I don't have power mirrors so I use these Crappy Mirrors from CW. They work fine but are a pain to install and remove. They also like to flop around (no matter how tight you get them) at highway speeds.
My 1997 F350 with my 1998 Lance 990 camper in the bed measures exactly 10.5 ft to the top of the air conditioner (no basement). I have not yet encountered any major height issues traveling off road in the U.S. but I have collected a few branches in the luggage rack and solar panel on forest...
I like these campers. I first heard about them when Truck Camper Magazine did a story on them. I wish they had room for a builtin propane generator but I like the styling inside. The fold up sink in the bathroom is clever and I like the ALDE central heat system. The color scheme is a bit ugly on...
My truck has a B & W turnover ball goose neck hitch in it. It came on the truck when I bought it from the previous owner who had a car hauler with a goose neck. If I ever decided to buy a fifth wheel camper (not likely), I would convert the fifth wheel as shown above. I've often considered...
I have read that some of the emissions standards involve measuring how much pollution is coming out of the tailpipe at idle. Obviously, smaller displacement and fewer cylinders will put out fewer harmful emissions. But in the end, there is no replacement for displacement. A good example is the...
Here's a link to a thread on lanceowners.org about the 830: http://lanceowners.hoop.la/topic/our-new-lance-830 There's a search function you can use to look at other threads regarding the 830.
Here's a link to the brochure for the 1172 and 1191 Lance campers for long beds with side entry...
Based on my conversations with both Lance 830 owners and non-owners, I'd say it was pretty popular. I love the floor plan and the side entry door and so do the owners. Why Lance stopped making it, we may never know. It may have been a niche item. One thing to note is availability. They are...
I can do the same thing but I have a Blue Seas Automatic Charging Relay (ACR) that will charge either side when a charging source is present and disconnect when the voltage on both sides drops to 12.75 volts. This way, I don't run my truck battery down using the camper, but it will charge the...
I have two Group 27 Interstate Deep Cycle batteries and a 140W solar panel with a Blue Sky SC-30 solar controller. It keeps my batteries topped off and I monitor usage with a Trimetric 2030 battery monitor. This system provides all the power I need and I can keep track of amp hours with the...
My Lance 990 bumper step has two positions it can be mounted. It can be in the center when not towing and to the right when not towing. This provides easy access to the rear door no matter what.
It sounds like your hitch is a class III with a 2" receiver. There are two types: Weight Carrying (WC) and Weight Distributing (WD). Not all hitches are rated for both. The WC hitch is rated for a max 6,000 lbs towing and 600 lbs tongue weight (TW). The WD hitches are rated at 10,000 lbs towing...
It is like anything else, things go out of style and come back again. Most used truck campers are "gently used" so keep that in mind if you can't find a new one that suits you. In 2013, I paid $7,200 for my Lance 990 which was 15 years old at the time but you couldn't tell that it had ever been...
The Lance 830 has a side door and will fit a short bed.
http://www.lancecamper.com/docs/2010-Camper-Brochure.pdf
It was made by Lance from 2008-2012. I love the cross camper dinette seating. The 830 fits short beds but the 1040 (same layout) fits a long bed.
I have a 1998 Lance Legend 990 that weighs 3,235 lbs as equipped (from the sticker on the camper). With water and gear, it weighs exactly 3,800 lbs. I started out hauling it with a SRW 1992 F250 HD 7.5L with a GVWR OF 8,800 lbs. The truck loaded with the camper did not handle very well. What...
I'm sure that is a less expensive approach and just as effective. TL says you can grind off some of the bumper stop material to suit your needs, up to about an 3/8". It would probably improve my ride a little but it's a 1 ton truck and I don't expect a good ride.
