What are some of the most reliable old vehicles?

I'll pitch in here with a dose of both schools of thought.. As far as the most reliable "Old" vehicle? Whichever one you've got the most passion for. To keep an "old" rig "reliable" you've got to be willing to live and breath it. That's a lot easier if you love it. It's less about reliability...

    Integrated Spare Fuel Tank

Basically imagine as much junk bolted to the outside of your rig as possible. With an effort made to put the heaviest items on the roof, because that's where they look the coolest when parked at Whole Foods. Make sure and install a snorkel, limb risers, as many LED's as will fit, and leave your...

    Integrated Spare Fuel Tank

Haha, I "wasn't". After building the truck I'm a bit more comfortable with it. Probably going to have to be me unless you can recommend any good aluminum welders in Peru..?

    Integrated Spare Fuel Tank

Thanks guys, 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, 6.0L gas, 2016 Four Wheel Camper Grandby, custom fabricated aluminum "adventure" bed. Or whatever. Not really sure what to call the bed. "Fancy thing I built to keep my hi-lift jack and all the tools out of my tiny living room". The standard...

    Integrated Spare Fuel Tank

Hey guys, Anybody know if there is a product similar to this one out there for fuel? I'd love to get 10-20 extra gallons of gasoline into the space between the bed bulkhead and our Four Wheel Camper. I've got several inches there I could eat up...

    Removable winch mount in bumper?

I built a front bumper with a 2" receiver tube integrated in. Ran 00 welding cable front-rear with the big Anderson connectors at each bumper. Now my Warn 9500HS on a carrier with 2" stinger can be mounted front and rear. We store it in the truck bed when not in use.

    Custom camper friendly truck bed..

So far so good. After over a year on the road and all the crappy roads from Oregon to Colombia, I had the camper off again the other day and did a thorough inspection. Everything's still holding together. The only damage I have is on the left side, rear box where the bolt for the rear shackle...

    Keep and repair or Replace?

300k is a lot, but like was said before; if you're going to have something with higher milage you'll have to work in, these things are great. Really easy to work on and parts are cheap and easy to get. All issues are well known and documented online. Mine has 200k which is obviously a lit less...

2005 Silverado 6.0L, heading to Argentina.

I was reading back through this, and I REALLY like this setup. It's kinda what I had in mind for a coil-over swap before. I like building my own stuff and have a fair amount of fabrication experience so it would be a pretty fun project. Probably going to have to wait until she gets shipped back...

2005 Silverado 6.0L, heading to Argentina.

You know, you're right. I actually drove around without it for a time trying to diagnose a weird noise, but I thought I got just a little more front-end dive in tight, twisty road turns. Never tried it with a load either. I was considering trying to come up with a quick disconnect system for it...

2005 Silverado 6.0L, heading to Argentina.

Yep, just left it down. The containers are relatively weather-proof so it wasn't an issue. There really wasn't a way to get the window back up, just not enough room.

    GMT-800 tire selection

I downsized from 35x12.5 r17's to the 285/75 r17's and I think, for me anyway, they're the perfect size. I'm also running H2 wheels on a 2500hd, so my situation is a bit different than yours. Sure, it's not a real common size, but I just ordered five from Amazon. Free shipping with prime and...

2005 Silverado 6.0L, heading to Argentina.

I climbed out the driver's side window and then scrambled over the tire/fender/bumper. Not all that hard really. I insisted with our agent that he let me back it in, thinking it'd be too tough to get out, but now that I've done it pulling straight in would have worked just fine too. The pictures...

Lets see some full size pictures...

I had to leave the driver's side window down after climbing out it, then sorta walking, kneeling, crawling on the front tire, fender, and bumper. Couldn't even walk on the hood because it had to be open so I could disconnect the battery...

    French family through America

Nick's right. No possible way until it's 25 years old. Not in the US anyway.. Sorry. There are tons of Americans who would love to have it and pay a premium. http://www.motoiq.com/MagazineArticles/ID/3198/Vehicle-Importation-Understanding-the-25-Year-Old-Rule.aspx

Thanks for all the real-world suspension advice too! I'd really like to do something, but obviously I'm limited by being so far from the US. We're in Colombia now and they're crazy about importing car parts.. There will definitely be a very serious re-fabricating of suspension once I'm back...

2005 Silverado 6.0L, heading to Argentina.

I had the front re-geared to 4.88 as well. It's not hard to find the ring/pinion for these, it was listed on Randy's and Yukon. I believe we went with Yukon gears in the end, but this was one of the very few things I had done by a shop, so I don't remember exactly. I do remember when I was...
