Started tearing into the trans side of my transaxle.
As I suspected, based on the condition of the diff bits, the inside of my trans case is pretty beat up as well.
This is the inside of the case where some frictions ride.
This it the bit that the ID of those frictions ride.
In case its...
I could very likely fix the case but, with all the wear that I am seeing on the parts that I can see, it is very likely that nearly every running surface is worn down pretty badly.
There was a lot of metal dust running around in this case for a long time.
Just quick update.
Got my engine and trans separated and started work on the trans.
Getting the two trans parts separated involved liberal use of my rubber mallet, a little heat and a brass bar.
Oh and like 20 old shop rags since I did not drain anything but hey that's how I roll.
I'm...
Hmm well with no sub-frame then you are pretty limited as to what can be done with stock components, as has been mentioned.
After looking at a couple of those vids posted above to get a general layout of the suspension I would bet you could get away with a couple inches of lift with nothing...
I know very little about the Dodge van but I can assume a few things.
It likely has leaf springs in the back so the rear can be lifted like any 4wd van or truck with the use of blocks or new spring packs which I am sure can be sourced from several places.
The front is where I may be way off...
I personally like the cooking segments.
I am always looking for camp meals using anything.
Don't really care for the staged "pranks".
Just seems cheesy.
I notice that they seem to mention that a lot of the trucks have lockers but a lot of the times they are not engaged.
Like if you were...
Taking a advantage of a little break from my jobby job to get some van stuff done.
Of course all this holiday junk occupies some of those days off but I'm going to make the best of it.
Anyway, I finally got the engine dropped out of this beast.
Down but not out.
There we go.
Now it's out...
It does brake in both directions so there is no issue with controlling it.
I used it to drop the engine from my other Vanagon.
I think I paid like $30 for the winch from harbor freight.
The crank mount did not last long so I had to fix that.
I will probably end up welding it on at some point...
I have made Some progress but it's never as much as I would like and none of it's that exciting.
I have been working on a couple of house things as well as some non car related garage stuff so that has slowed me down a little.
It started getting cold so I had to sort out how to rearrange things...
Given that the LTs are a traditional front engine layout I feel it would be super simple to swap just about anything you want in there and make it 4x4 in the process.
I feel this platform is just begging for one of the new Cummins R2.8 crate engines.
If I could find a 2wd one cheap enough in...
I have a bit of an unorthodox suggestion.
So there is this guy.
https://soundman.co/
They sell a kit to mount one in your dash.
However, if you contact them you can send them your dash bits where you would like the ipad to sit and they have a fella that goes by the name of Rafa who will do...
I do appreciate the offer but my plan is to upgrade that mess as well.
Dropping the tank is in the plans but I am not going to use the stock stuff.
I am not super sure what I am going to do but there will be permanent fittings attached to the tank so I never have to do the seals ever again.
I...
Nope not yet.
No physical stuff anyway.
Like an idiot I bought another Vanagon and I am in the process of going through it to use as a daily driver.
Once that is done (hopefully in the next month or two) I will get back to the 4x4.
In my spare time I have been doing a little design work on...
Yeah I am not really concerned with engine temps.
This engine could very likely run with no oil cooler as evident by the number of early vw I4s that had no such device.
I have a number of reasons for ditching the stock set up.
1. I am not a fan of the whole coolant/oil interface.
If I have a...
Hi gang sorry for the lack of updates.
I have been working on the van quite a bit but it has just been little things.
Every time I think I am going to make some progress I run into a snag.
Just trying to get this engine all buttoned up then I find out I need some different bolts or new parts...
Perhaps I should mention that I also have some parts that I was going to use to beef up the suspension a bit more and run a 17/19 spoke wheel combo.
If you are looking for a fun winter project, buy this bike and I will make you a deal on the parts that I bought.
Let me do an inventory of what I...
