That's a good description of the Jeep Cherokee favored by the younger generation. Just down the street they have probably 3 of the 2nd generation. They have fun with them. In fact I would say that is the next collectible vehicle. Now, when they become older and their family grows, what do you...

I've already had to replace the fuel pump on my DI. When if failed it was dead, not a slow fail. Mileage? Probably in the 100K miles range so not common but over the years pumps have been on the high end of the occurrence range. I guess if you get rid of a vehicle before 50K miles then field...

Has nothing to do with cheap. It has everything to do with cost of ownership upfront and long term. Simple econ101. Some people's personal budgets don't support $70K upfront so a lower entry point makes sense such that a vehicle can be personalized over time.

As for field repair, I've always thought of it this way. If a fuel pump fails on my DI I'm usually with someone and we can return the next day or so, pop the fuel pump access panel in the rear floor, swap and be back on the trail. Same with most of the components on the DI. My LR4? Not so much...

Wrangler starts at $28,295. The D90 starts at $65K as a FE but probably $49K after initial production. That's +75% premium for the D90 with coils. Now we can all option out both to the point that the Wrangler has Dana 44's front and rear while the D90 has air suspension. The Wrangler Rubicon is...

Early in Gerry McGovern's time at LR they made a product direction choice of moving upscale with the Luxury Defender and with the latest news, also maybe downscale into Mini Countryman like products. As he has been described he is a 'modernist' of the DC100 school of thought that began a decade...

When did camping become 'overlanding' and when did solid-axle vs IS even become a check-list item for vehicle choice? Now about "beer at least an average of several full weeks a year" ..........

At one time mentioned as built in India. Will basically be a smaller Defender body on the Evoque-like platform. Think Mini Countryman. A low-cost car-like 'Defender'. Engine size less than 2.0L. There is also thoughts to offer it across Jaguar and RR but with different features.

Measurements / test fitting required but it appears the Luxury Defender brakes went backwards with respect to the LR4. The LR4 with 5L engine could use 18" wheels with spacers or Compomotives. Now it is 20"?

The Discovery 5 was a 'tweener'. Is the new Luxury Defender also a 'tweener'? Moving away from the DI/DII platform cost LR dearly.

Per Gerry the DC100/new Defender dates from the 90's. TopSpeed - It’s plainly clear to see that a lot of the DC100’s design DNA stuck and while there have been subtle changes made to the design itself, it still looks a lot like the 2011 concept. This isn’t a point Land Rover’s design boss...

Evolution of the Defender was a viable alternative as demonstrated by the Scout III and competitors such as Jeep. They had the underpinnings of the RRC and Disscovery I. LR chose to not invest for ............ 35 years. Ask LR why. I suspect four owners and financial realities prevented...

Agreed, the LR product line sequence was the Range Rover Classic, Discovery, Defender. All leveraged each other which highlights the latitude of the underlying architecture to extend into the 00's with investment. If there was investment in the Defender product line I suspect it would have...

Sure, that is why the "solid axle" Jeep sells at 20+K per month while the "IFS" D5 averages around 700 per month. Or maybe it's much more than IFS vs solid-axle that garners the sales volume? What attributes account for the large differential in volume vs the country of manufacturer? Last time...

That's already been discussed. The 35 year old design with zero investment sold at very low rates. How many manufacturers tried to off a 35 year old design in 2016? The DI with Defender chassis, suspension, powertrain, etc has outsold the LR3, LR4 and D5. If LR had invested in the Defender the...

For the Defender target market, which was utility and rural, the older design does meet more of the requirements. LR overtly made the decision to move the Defender brand upmarket, to more urban/luxury. Those criticizing the new Defender likely believe that it is a better "Discovery" than the...

Death wobble also can occur on IFS vehicles. The root cause is the same as solid/live-axle systems. Worn components, poorly engineering aftermarket kits, poor alignment, backyard mechanics, etc. My IH Scouts with D44 axles never had death wobble issues. Even the one with 400K miles. Appears...
