HowTo avoid that these Datacrawlers can catch you (optaining internet privacy)

Yeah, that about sums it up. I know I should, but I can't even get excited enough to get off my ass and employ a free VPN.

Which type of coordinates do you use?

W3W seems a lot like Google Plus coordinates; Only machine generated and machine readable. No good if you don't have their machine.

    Sat phones?

I've had the gen 1 Inmarsat iSatphone Pro since 2011. With Inmarsat (and, presumably, Iridium) there's no BS about why the satellites don't work as Frenchie described with his early Globalstar service. Inmarsat and Iridium are real communications companies with very important clients...

Pocket Media Group buys Gaia GPS

That's a chilling thought. But, then again, most things eventually go bad. I'd like to get a few more years out of Gaia.

New Garmin Montana 700 Series GPS Units with 5" Touchscreen and InReach Capable

I bought my Montana in 2011, the year they came out. I hope the performance of the touchscreen on the 700 is approximately where the first iPhone was in 2007. That would be nice.

Which type of coordinates do you use?

UTM, if I have a choice. Otherwise, I've got to use whatever the guidebook, trail report, or map uses.

    Portable Power Pack

It's the older one with just a cigar, Hella, and 50A Anderson for 12V outs. It weighs about 79 pounds with the Northstar NST_AGM27F battery in it. Noticeably heavier than with the group 34 in it. Don't have a photo, but I'm hoping to install/use it later this month (Feb 2021) and I can come...

    Portable Power Pack

I got 7 years from the Die Hard Platinum AGM group 34 running the fridge Generally, it was tasked with running an Engel MT45 for 3 days in cool weather w/o operating the engine to recharge. Also, My vehicle (Toyota 4Runner) is all passenger compartment, and I'm not putting liquid sulfuric acid...

    Portable Power Pack

I bought my NL-PPP, full kit with wiring to the vehicle included, in the spring of 2013. I selected it because I wanted to use a 12V. refrigerator on camping trips, and also I knew I'd be changing vehicles in the next year or so. I also got the dual battery controller wired remote. It has been...

Keeping a small Honda generator in your car

I can confirm that on 3 units I rented, two Honda 2000 and one no name 2000 clone, none smelled while being transported IF the gas vent lever was in the closed position.

The Story Behind My Failed Pony Express Overland Trip

Nice report. The drone footage of the Jeep plowing through the silt dust was something I have not seen before.

How noisy are aluminum storage cases?

Storm cases are just like Pelican cases (and, in fact, are now sold by Pelican) except with nicer, less-brutal latches. The Wolf Packs are a cheap alternative. They are not perfect. The pull-off, non-hinged lids are sometimes annoying and constitute a mixed blessing. I had a large, tallish...

    Stainless Steel Water Carrier?

Depends on how much cargo space you have, and maybe on how much like home you want your water dispensing to be. I use a small vehicle (4Runner), so I'd not be interested in the Sansone containers, as nice as they look, because they are round. Round = space inefficient. I currently use Scepter...

How noisy are aluminum storage cases?

Just out of curiosity, which thin-walled ABS bins would these be?

How noisy are aluminum storage cases?

I often had a small, hard item, like a plastic drinking cup or maybe a small food can, rattling inside the one Zarges case I used for a few years. Switched to plastic (Wolf Packs and Storm) and it's quieter inside the 4Runner.

    Paper 2.0

Agree that the gazetteer-sized atlases are the only thing that's practical without knowing the specific small area one is going to. For huge areas in maximum detail, nothing beats multiple electronic devices. A second smartphone like roving mentioned, or a mapping GPS w/ maps installed like...

    Gaia Questions

I don't know what relationship is between the HEMA in North America you refer to, and this "HEMA USA Atlas" as provided by Gaia. Subject for further research. UPDATE: When I switch Gaia map display (connected to Gaia on web) from the "HEMA USA Atlas" to "Gaia Topo (feet)", the map appears...

The Good and the Bad about Baffin and Sorel Boots.

I had pair of Sorel Caribous that I bought in 1996. They lasted a long time (≈10 years) of occasional use. Recently, when I went to possibly replace them with the same, I noticed that many of the user reviews claimed that since Columbia bought Sorel, and then moved the manufacturing to China...
