I kinda wish my 9 year old pit mix (who was trying to wrestle with Colossus in the beer line) was that mellow. It was good to meet you.

Advise needed: how to keep meat from spoiling

There is no cut and dry formula for how long dry ice will last - it all depends on ambient temperature/pressure, type of packaging, etc. Also be sure to check with your airline to be sure you can put dry ice on the plane, there are restrictions on the amount that can be taken on & the packing...

BMW riders - Thoughts on G 650 GS Sertao?

Ah - smart man. Indeed. Of course, you can always buy the 950 & ride it for a bit to see if it fits. If it doesn't - sell it and move on. Just be aware that a 950 can get you in trouble - fast. They're not nearly as portly as the big R-bikes - but they aren't lightweights either. The...

    Trans-America Trail

That's moving . . . We spent 14 trail days from I-25 and the Pacific coast, on motorcycles. Average speeds on motorcycles are typically quite a bit higher than in a 4x4.

BMW riders - Thoughts on G 650 GS Sertao?

Why does it have to be "or"? You know you want two bikes. Or three. Maybe four. (five???). Really, comparing a Sertao (which is really just a modern version of the older F650GS Dakar) to a 950 or 990 Adventure won't get you anywhere - they're different bikes for different (although slightly...

    Holy granby batman

OK - 1250 installed sounds better. I didn't do mine yet - I think I can squeeze a few more years out of it - plus I ran out of $$$, so I didn't replace the top or the door - I figured I could replace those down the road without tearing into any of the other stuff we did (new siding, insulation...

BMW riders - Thoughts on G 650 GS Sertao?

I'd say the opposite - for exactly the reason you cite in the last sentence. The 950 is a freekin' monster. Big, fast, tons of suspension - but very unrefined compared to the BMW. Given the stated purpose (commuting, zipping around Preskitt [sic], etc), the BMW is a better choice, IMO. One...

    Holy granby batman

Seriously???? Was that installed, or just the fabric in a box? That had to be the installed price . . . 6 or 8 months ago ATC quoted me ~$650 for new fabric for my FWC Grandby. That was just the fabric - I would have to do the install.

2012 Dodge 5500 - Expedition Camper - Custom Build - Ready to Explore

If you're seriously considering going that route, be sure to do your research. A few years ago someone was trying to raffle off a vehicle & ran into legal problems with it - I don't recall the details, but the vehicle ended up not getting raffled off.

Carrying Bicycles with a Pop-Up Camper

We have an 8' camper (FWC Granby) on a 6.5' bed, so we can't put the bikes out back either - so we put them up front. Probably easier said than done in your locale, but a front receiver is little more than a piece of 2.5" square tube with some mounting tabs welded on, and a bike carrier is...

So you're gonna be the guy walking around the campground at night taking pictures of people in their tents? :peepwall:

Experienced expeditioner... expeditionist... I donno(?), new rider

I'd look at the big thumpers (single cylinder) . . . 600 - 650cc range. DR650s are great, so are the XLs. The smaller bikes (KLR250, DRZ400, etc) will likely leave you wanting a bit more on the long trips. They (small bikes) are great for setting up a base camp and exploring from there (I...

    Dirtmobile - A KTM 990 Build

    fwc material fix

It can be patched. The guys at FWC can point you in the right direction - as well as give you a quote on a replacement (was $1000 last year, parts only). Check the velcro on the windows - it wears out & then the windows won't stay closed - kind of a pain.

    FWC+04 Tacoma-suspension

Just curious - are you able to lower the spare tire on the Tacoma with the tailgate down? I have to pull the tailgate off of my Dodge when I put the camper on, or else I can't get the tire down.

    FWC+04 Tacoma-suspension

If the camper isn't loaded all the time (IE: you take it off the truck between trips), airbags are *the* way to go -- IMO anyway. You can get Firestone bags with 10" of travel - they're not going to limit your suspension travel (remember, that is 10" of travel measured inboard of your leaf...

    Olympus OM-D initial impressions ...

Hey Jeff - whose kids did you steal for those pictures? Last time I checked - yours aren't that big yet. :Wow1: I'm still getting used to all that extra space on the 5D sensor -- I'm sure I'll adapt though.

New rider seeks input on purchase

Honestly, I'm probably not the guy to ask about that. I'm short (5'6", 30" inseam), but just about everything feels cramped to me. I had to raise the bars on the 650, and on the 800 as well. While neither of those made me feel like a circus bear on a bicycle (although my girlfriends DR200...

New rider seeks input on purchase

My 650GS (single) averaged just over 70mpg when I rode the TAT in 2008. When I was riding pure freeway (75+mph), it was giving me about 45 - 50mpg. My 800GS (twin) averages in the neighborhood of 50mpg with mixed riding (city, highway, dirt). Strait freeway (again, 75 - 85mph) comes back in...
