I super duper don't want to come across as flaming you...
more like that guy who would run across the campsite yelling "stop" right before you poured lighter fluid into the soldering fire :)
Strong response...yeah, but because your first post left out some of the details you provided in follow...
I really like the idea of commercial vs recreational platforms when it comes to overlanding with more than 2 people or more than min comfort.
I would lay to point the number of US school buses that are living a long long life south of our border (all the way to the end of Argentina).
In my...
Brother at least you are going to get a Spot or Sat Phone...both actually would be smart with the sound of her condition.
Thanks for the extra details....it helps but doesn't change my core belief that THIS trip was a mistake.
I agree travel is a vital part of life otherwise there wouldn't be...
Holy crap you are insane,
and your buddy is twice that for going along on your manic episode.
Flat out I can't type what I would really like to and if we were face to face it would be all I could do not to fly off the handle at how wrong, wrong, wrong you were to do this trip with your daughter...
This is a great idea as you can camp/hang at Travis's shop and do any needed easy stuff to the rig..
Plus he is out at the east edge of town where there are hiking trails, 4wd trails and pretty stuff to see.
Then I would have an excuse to run out there and hang out with both of ya during the day :)
I am off work due to the open gallbladder surgery last week...5 weeks off with no lifting/hard work allowed :)
So I am all about smoking some cigars and relaxing as much as you want while you are here in Phx Streak...
You are also welcome to a few nights on the sofa/futon, plenty of hot water...
James I would really recommend Mark (articulate) or Greg Stephans (??)
Between them you have stories in Overland Journal and the Adventure Family stuff at Overland Expo. Neither are pro's but they could be.
Also pm Honu (username and I think real name) he is an FJ Cruiser guy that is on here...
Overland Journal did a great article on a lady who bought a Chevy van for $500? in Arizona and then drove down to Central America...and she dealt with issues in route.
I am pretty sure that there is enough to explore between the upper end of Alaska and the Darien Gap in Panama that any ol'...
I understand your point and agree with much of it...
I would take it a step further an point out that with a bit of searching you will find hundreds of stories of people who spent very little on a "build" and just dealt with things as they broke.
Especially when you are traveling in poorer areas...
This is a perfect example of why you are better off dealing with Adventure Trailers instead of "directly" with FlipPac.
AT will take care of you and stay on top of things. Sure you might still get the horrible wait times out of the factory but at least you will get call backs, response and know...
I love my Trail Grapplers, and ran 36,000 miles on a set of 33" with never a flat or any sort of issue and about 4,000 miles now on 35"s and also no issue.
And that is running a heavy rig 11,000lbs on all kinds of rocks, sand, mud and snow
If your goal is a great LED light made in the USA then Rigid LED Lights is the way to go.

I love mine and I have never heard anything bad about them, watch this video to see them beating the crap out of a light
YouTube - Rigid...
true to get a ford diesel van you are looking at used, but that isn't a bad thing
i like diesel if you will really wheel the rig, idle for extended times or have a heavy rig
but gas works in reality
Colombia River makes great stuff and they stand behind them...
I own a few and my younger son has a number of them.
But Brian I would go to Big 5 as they have a bunch of CRKT's on clearence so maybe you can get the knife cheaper and save the gift cert for something else you need?
Just a thought
I understand what the guys above are saying and I think if my wife traveled more with me then I would be on their side of the fence...
but funny enough for me as an amputee and the disabled folks I talk out, well a RV bathroom is too small and too much trouble for us so the folding hosptial...
some of the things that make a van great for winter/foul weather camping are:
you don't have to exit the vehicle
with a pop top, someone can sleep above while someone else moves around below
you can really do a great job with insulation of the walls & top
getting up and moving around it is easy...
