Sprinter 4WD Conversion Idea, GMT-800 IFS.

Put the van through it's paces. Was a day of hard work. I don't think we will be doing it again, at least by choice. I can definitely confirm the rollover angle is greater than 30 degrees. The only close calls were nearly hitting the driveshaft. I needed the front locker a few times, used the...

Pics of your VAN! Post up!

That is the original flare from years ago. It does blend in pretty well from some angles though.

MB 1120 Coming to America! Purchase, Build and Now Travel!

Full timer gear should provide 10 years of nearly daily usage without significant repair. Just that simple. Unfortunately we find ourselves in a somewhat niche interest/market, so paying a premium for lower volume (and mixed quality) stuff seems to be common. Euro stuff might be fantastic...

Yetti’s Pacific North West Exploration & Expeditions Picture heavy

I tend to resize photos destined for the web to around 1.5-2 megapixels (approximately 1920:1080 resolution max). Since so many cameras take photos at 16+ megapixels, they are often to large for most forum software to deal with. Not to mention most forum operators don't want to pay for the...

Yetti’s Pacific North West Exploration & Expeditions Picture heavy

Thanks for posting, those archeological sites are fascinating. Regarding the pipe Us, they allow for thermal expansion. Otherwise long runs would buckle and break away from the mounts. Those pipes can see 400F temp swings.

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

We are in the middle of a build right now, actually coming up on 6 months next week. The grind of endless little (but necessary) tasks can be tough. Any little victories that make it feel more complete are a welcome diversion. Even if they aren't really necessary for actual usage. Really...

    Overland Sprinter Build

We have mostly figured out the basics, just trying to round out the outfit (hopefully move into it in a few weeks). We basically gutted it, and rebuilt with all new insulation, mini split for AC/heat, all electric appliances, and converted the garage to a workshop. We haven't bought a tow...

    Overland Sprinter Build

Glad to hear it! Not sure its comparable, but I average 17-18 with my van currently. Before the 4x4 conversion it was 18-19mpg. Tires brand didn't seem to affect it much (size and width does though). I wouldn't sweat the fuel economy impact regardless. I got 40k+ out of my bfg KO2s...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

I recently discovered the expanding foam used to plug gaps around windows, is a fantastic adhesive (in the states we actually have a version that's specifically an adhesive). Sets up in an hour, and won't sag when hot like contact adhesives.

    Ford Dodge or Mercedes van

I would take snow tires 2wd over summer tires AWD any winter day. So you can probably save yourself the price and sourcing headaches and go 2WD and snow tires, assuming you are running an AWD with summer tires in the winter without issue.

    Ford Dodge or Mercedes van

Depends on where you live. In the USA diesel is often 10-20% more than gasoline, which wipes out most or all of the fuel economy improvements. Then add in the extra maintenance costs of a diesel (DEF/urea, overall higher cost of ownership), and a light duty diesel vehicle doesn't have any...

    Ford Dodge or Mercedes van

I would say transit AWD, or if you feel the need a transit quigley conversion. The current pricing for sprinter 4x4s is above MSRP in most markets. Not sure on the transit. The only reason to consider the sprinter in my opinion, is if you can get the I4 gasoline engine. Quigley was (and may...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

I can't tell from the photos, but lightly pre scoring the paint where it might flex and crack at seams, could be called for? A lot depends on how the panels move, which is based on fastening method and adhesive used. A clean break at the score mark, is often a lot less obvious than an...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Having spent some time in the Aus summer, one could conceivably argue the only appropriate color for a live aboard vehicle there, is white! What paint system are you using? Single stage hardened urethane, or?

Fridge Controller for Danfoss/SECOP powered fridges/freezers

Yes, or if you want a single speed, a resistor in series. If you check the danfoss/secop manual, they have a list of resistor values and the speed they produce. I think its 2-4k ohm, so a potentiometer in the right range would work fine. You may need to get a 0-2k pot and then put a 1-2k...

Fridge Controller for Danfoss/SECOP powered fridges/freezers

The danfoss compressors are inverter driven (3 phase ac output, low voltage). They can vary the speed in a ~1500rpm range. Advanced controllers like the one I made use a PWM signal. Old school mechanical thermostats have the option to use a series resistor, for the fridge maker to adjust...

Fridge Controller for Danfoss/SECOP powered fridges/freezers

The T terminal is a 5V current limited supply. The controller measures the current on the T terminal, and that is what controls compressor speed and on/off. It should be described in one of my prior posts in detail. Connecting the T terminal to ground or C sets the current to max, which is...
