Yes, the main reason I need air is for tires. Those pay to use compressor kiosks at fuel stations are a pain. And most times I need air in much more desolate places. Air horn would be a nice extra thing to have too. Maybe a 12v setup with a little 5 gallon tank is all I need.
Those York compressors are nice! In my last rig I had a pto driven compressor and it was very strong. But I could only use it when parked with engine running and go through a procedure of levers and switches to get it to fire up. I'm leaning towards a 12v system so I can use it parked or while...
They do make attachments and air compressors for both the Cummins engine and NV4500 transmission. Both are very expensive. Not sure, we'll see. Project for the fall.
Yes, someone else who understands the gratification of repairing something on your own and it actually working! Thanks! Rig has...
Dang, well you got a really nice deal. After a little bit of research, any which way is expensive unless I can get a used deal. We'll see. It be nice to be able to inflate tires whenever wherever.
I think I might install one of them 12v air compressor like they use for big air horns. I got plenty of space for permanent mounting of pump and tank stuff. And plenty y of power from the lithium batteries.
I have a Ninja Foodi pressure cooker/air fryer. Love it! If the sun is out and I got power to burn, I'm cooking something in it. In reality, pressure cookers don't use lots of electricity. Very efficient way to cook off the grid when power is somewhat limited.
Putting stuff back together went much smoother than taking them apart. Boy, I really need an impact gun in this rig...
Well that was convenient. Super, super close was a junkyard that had 5 vans at my disposal. Guy used them for storage, was super nice, and let me take any parts I needed off...
Yea, I noticed it wasn't a fresh, clean break. Kinda scary, could have been worse. Was lucky I was only going about 20mph. Just need to get back on the road right now. In the near future I will inspect the other side when I change those balljoints. Hoping this is just a fluke thing.
Got to work the next day immediately, ripping apart this mess.
Lots of seized components. No point in trying to save anything, as it's all tore up pretty bad. Let it burn. Glad I have a torch onboard.
Once I got everything out I was able to assess the true damage. The bottom control arm is...
JB Weld might have fixed the crankshaft, but I don't think it's gonna work on this one!:p
The headsets plug into a Sigtronics Transcom intercom system that plugs into the radio on small aircrafts and such. I just plugged it into a 12 volt outlet and taped the the plugs that go into the radio...
Haha, throw in a GM axle! In mean time, make sure you grease your brake guide pins on a bi-weekly schedule! I'll be good here. Not my first time doing major surgery on the side of the road. I got some cold drinks and ice cream, so I'll manage here for a few days.
This is more than just balljoints. The balljoints seem to be fine. And anything suspension or brake related on these old GM's is easy. Everything is usually bolt on. Ford? That's a different story. Not sure what those engineers were thinking!
Oops. That was the mother of all potholes...
I know a lot of people like to lower the suspension on these rigs, but this is not the way to do it!
Oh boy, there are several things that need attention here...
It would be nice to find a fan for a vehicle that I can get anywhere, instead of some fancy aftermarket one. My radiator is 18"x28". I'll look into the Ford Taurus. I don't need much air movement, 95% of the time this engine wouldn't even need a fan. It was really just that one mountain pass I...
I'll look into the shroud. But the mechanical fan needs to stick out from the engine quite far with spacers, and that puts a lot of strain on parts. I'm still leaning towards removing all that junk and just slapping a big electric fan on there.
Hmm, that is a great idea! I'll look into it and see if it's possible with minimal effort. The charge pipes for the intercooler I made come very close and are almost in front of the cooling fan.
Things are much easier on the other side of the mountains.
No more hard work for the old girl. She is behaving, that's all I could ask for. She performed well on those big mountain passes.
During her break from the mountains, she brought me to the geographical center of the United States...
The mechanical fan doesn't really do much right now since it's so far from the radiator. It's been fine, except on those ridiculously long, big hills. I expect many more of those though. I think I need to move the fan closer, which I don't want to do since that will put more stress on the fan...
