So what you guys are saying is that if we go for the Commando 450, we're going to be better off with a plate exchanger? Say, 180 plate? And a low flow head would work good with a Helton type?
Fun to work on these old trucks? I'll agree with you there. Lots of work, but in the end you get a good dependable rig setup just the way you want at a price you can afford. But...
...a lot of this ^ can turn into this ˇ real quick...
The solargizer is a great idea. Now that the truck is...
Hmmm, yes. Use the second alternator to power some deep cycle batteries. Also wire in some solar panels on the roof into the aux alternator/deep cycles. That will help support the fridge and microwave...
Children, calm down. There are many ways to get hot water for a shower. Different systems work for different people who do different things in different scenarios. What matters most is that you have that hot water coming out of the shower head. The OP has a great setup! Have you figured out a...
I think any shower system is going to have lots of componants. Let's face it, you have a vehicle, and want to take a shower with it. The logistics of that is a little more complicated than putting ice in a cooler to keep your food/drinks cold. Go and tell any "normal" person that you're going to...
The generator setup runs like a champ now! Rewired a bunch of stuff and got the air compressor running.

The original generator control equipment is mounted above the fire extinguisher. Well, it was a mess. It sort of worked, but every so often the...
Too much math for me, haha. I took to some guesstimations and trial/error. I can't have an opinion on the Helton exchangers, except that they may not be as efficient as plate exchangers, as the plate units most likely have more surface area than tube units. My system runs less than 1gpm and...
Well dang, ain't that fancy. Never knew something like that existed. Seems a tid bit easier than making a campfire and digging out the old dutch oven, just to make a few biscuits. I will definetly look into getting one of those, thanks for heads up!
Did a good amount of research on some of the fridges out there. While they work well and draw very little electricity, they all cost more than I paid for the whole truck!!! Been using bags of ice for years, and it does pretty good for the price...
I've got far out ideas like putting leftovers in some Tupperware and just pulling over on side of road, popping it in the microwave, eat real quick and get back on the road. Can pull out tv dinners from the fridge if we get really lazy, haha.
Hmmm, I think we're gonna need a fridge in here...
To fix the broken/missing aluminum chassis for the contact body, we TIG welded what we could and made some brackets out of steel plate. All the 30 year old rubber mounts were long overdue for a change, so they were all replaced as well as the mounting bolts. Also added a few goodies.
These...
A few more odds and ends going on. The fuel shutoff solenoid in the injection pump went bad. The only way to shutoff the truck was to cover the air intake to "choke" the engine.

Replaced that and truck ran good again.
Another thing to fix are these...
Free showers to female campers? I'm the only one in camp with a shower, they come running up in a line to use it. How do you think the female in the photo got to use it?
Yea, the lightbar is cool. It's nice to join in on the "military convoys" to events like parades and military shows and stuff with the lightbar going. It work's at the shows because it's the lightbar that's supposed to be on our trucks. They are out there, you just got to keep your eyes and ears...
Onboard generator is working much better. Some issues with the old controlling relays and control stuff. Might need some more work and/or replacement. But we can run power tools and stuff and the generator controls engine rpm on it's own!

Now that the...
You really need to determine if the Suburban is decent enough to keep. Things like rocker and frame rot are signs that you may want to pass and find something else. Is the suspension lift setup properly? If not, is it a driving hazard? Are you going to blow tie rod ends a lot? How about tire...
Ok, so sleeping on the roof of the vehicle while camping is not going to work out as planned due to environmental reasons.
So maybe it wasn't actual camping, but we still spent the night somewhere other than home. :peepwall:

Obviously, this sleeping...
