Here we go again.
Not any more. Sears terminated their contract with Odyssey a couple of years ago. The new DieHard AGM Golds appear to be Northstar, but maybe not. If you find a Platinum in a Sears store, it will be old stock.
Not true. Odyssey wants you to charge them when they get to...
.
True. The Optimas are primarily house batteries to support the fridge (Indel B 50) on trips, but I can also switch one or both of them into the system for winching or starting duty.
Did speak with Morningstar tech support a while ago about the 113F ambient max for the Duo controller. Tech...
When the truck is parked in the AZ desert in August or September, there is no place cooler. I have personally recorded ambient temps in the shade at 128F, and cabin/shell interior temps at 185F after being parked for a few hours. Truck is white. Odyssey is in the engine compartment and...
Based upon my discussions with Odyssey tech support, the main issue with Odyssey 31s in normal production vehicles is their inability to deliver 14.7V to the battery during charging from the alternator. In the PW, at least, the charging voltage is coded into the ECM and cannot be changed, even...
The PWs have a 12,000 lb OEM Warn winch that seems to use the same components as Warn's own 15,000 lb winch. Some PW guys use their winches hard and max draw is about 440 amps, as I recall. In an 8,000 lb 3G with a single battery and a 160 amp alternator, the battery is easily discharged to...
The truck I am dealing with now is a Power Wagon, and a few PW guys who "upgraded" from the factory G65 FLA battery to a G31 AGM have switched back to the FLA because of hassles with the big AGM. On paper, the G31 Odyssey is the way to go, but it's such a big PITA that the FLA makes sense for...
I had some time today so I did some research. Battery recommendations for true solar apps seem to lean toward Trojan, Concorde, Crown, and some seem to favor Lifeline. None of these seem to be the dual purpose batteries (like Odyssey) that most of us seem to favor for our vehicles. In the...
I left a message for Bogart, no relevant info on their website. Spoke with a tech at Solar Blvd, and he suggested a Morningstar PWM controller if I go with a 12V panel, or an MPPT controller from Morningstar, Outback or Midnight Solar if I can fit a 24V panel. So far, it looks like a single...
I'm getting close to installing solar on the truck with the Odyssey, just to mitigate the hassle of constantly charging and reconditioning that battery. My current stumbling block seems to be the charge controller, because I would like to use solar to keep the Odyssey topped up, while also...
Home Depot has Pelican 20 and 35 on sale today only, online only at what appears to be pretty good prices. White 20qt is $146.

NFW. Aside from the apparent stupidity of carrying 110 gallons of explosive liquid with no protection from minor traffic bumps, those drums are tall and will raise the CG of the truck. We don't know the year or condition or options on your Suburban, so the absolute weight question is a...
I am on my third Odyssey 31 in one truck, and my first Northstar in a different truck. The Northstar seems to be a better battery for my situation, because neither truck is a daily driver. I have to put the Odyssey on an AC conditioning charger every couple of weeks, and I never put the...
I forgot to mention the fuel pump failure. Mine failed suddenly, running fine one minute then not at all. Those pumps are supposedly more sensitive than most to running on a low tank because they seem to need a lot of cooling. Replacement is a pain in the *** and not cheap. I think I paid...
I use only stainless on my truck because it's stronger than aluminum, but not as strong as carbon steel. I always use anti-seize on stainless threads because stainless has a tendency to gall, and once it does, you are pretty much screwed if the stainless is stronger than your aluminum shell.
Will depend on the rivnuts. Big ones will be plenty strong, probably stronger than the shell, but can be a real pain to install if you can't get a good angle on the tool. If you are using a manual puller, you can cheat by adding a length of pipe to the handles to increase leverage. I used...
1. A used lumber rack that mounts to the bed rails and comes up around the shell.
2. Yakima makes a series of rack mounts that fit to the sides of the shell rather than to the top, and elevate the bars above the shell. I think they are called Side Loaders (or something like that). You should...
At 320K miles, you are ahead of the game. My cousin got over 400k on his with no failure, but that was all desert cruising, no traffic at all. The path forward depends on how it fails. One of mine grenaded at about 90k, destroyed the pumpkin and the axle shafts. I found a used, complete rear...
True, but lots of the inexpensive compressors/inflators come with long wires and short hoses, so that you have to move the compressor from tire to tire. If I'm going to modify one of those, I'd rather just shorten the factory wires and lengthen the hose.
