    Excursion Opinions - Drivetrain Options

Some thoughts on the diesel, mine is 6.0, I wouldn’t have chosen differently, but I wish I had known... 15 Quart oil changes every 5k miles. Push longer at your own risk. This runs me about $120 with filter doing my own. $100 fuel filter every 12k miles. Because of the front driveshaft...

    Excursion Opinions - Drivetrain Options

A lot of the diesel issues go with the length of your daily commute. When I used to drive my 6.0 70+ miles each way to work it was awesome. Now that it sits a lot and only get 14-18 mile trips, it is starting to have lots of little annoying problems. I don’t believe these are all mileage...

    Diesel engines

I might have missed the point, is your current 88 a gasser? If so, I highly recommend selling / swapping it for a diesel rig. There are a lot of differences: Radiator Oil cooler Dash cluster and gauges Air conditioner routing Front Springs Fuel tank Fuel Pickup Fuel return lines Fuel Filter...

    Diesel engines

I would stay with the 6.5 and refresh it for reliability. It will get you down the road for 400k miles or so with minimal fuss and plenty of power. All the parts are available and fit just fine. Back when I was building a 6.2 turbo truck, I used to regularly reference a site called the diesel...

    An Electric Unimog...

You can choose your own level of difficulty depending on the number of features you want. My grandfather built a fully electric truck by doing a conversion almost 25 years ago. It can be very simple. The lions share of cost is in batteries. There is an electric vehicle builders association...

    Motor change

I am not recommending this, try it at your own risk! An even sketchier trick, but sometimes works, is to put tension between the engine and trans with a ratchet strap and then shake the hell out of it. If you have tiny misalignment, the shaking corrects it and the strap tension pulls stuff...

    Motor change

Absolutely check for pin damage or alignment first. Then check for interfering harnesses or tubing (as noted above). If you don’t have fine control on your lifting device, I.E. a chain-fall hoist with one of those “engine tilt” devices and a floor jack under the tranny to tilt it nose up...

    2012 JKU no a/c

Someone with a good scan tool or auto enginuity software should be able to tell you if your control module is outputting the signal to start the compressor. I’ve never specifically tried that on mine, but I’m pretty sure that I’ve seen climate controls in some of the sensor menus.

Does anyone know where to buy this piece

Buy a bulkhead fitting, as noted above. They are available in person at Parker Hose stores if you want to see it upfront. Typically 1/4” NPT on both sides of the fitting, it will accept all of your “normal” thread on air fittings.

My Yakima Skyrise RTT has been falling apart

The lock nuts used on my Tepui barely qualified as hardware. I can only imagine what happens when you cut the price point in half. Get some real cap screws with real nyloc nuts and compare. The lock plastic is taller and thicker with more thread engagement in the metal and the plastic. Only...

People think pulleys increase pulling power.

That may be the most force. In the hypothetical 9000 lb winch and infinitely stuck truck scenario, I would be afraid of the snatch block loads there, and curious what to do when you get to the end of your extension cable... hope you’re unstuck?

    wild coast tent floor issues

If I had a similar issue the first thing I would be looking at is the alignment and tightness of the side hinges, then the straps going over the frame to the floor. Does the tent open “flat” on its own, or does it need weight on the ladder side to engage the hinge? It is really hard to...

People think pulleys increase pulling power.

It has been quite a few years since my crane certification class, but the 40 ton rough terrains and even the 180 or 200 ton cranes I’ve worked with only use a single cable / wire rope. Similarly to a rigged winch, that might go back and forth many times, but it is still just 1 cable.

People think pulleys increase pulling power.

I have a feeling we are going to go back into the rabbit hole. The snatch block “feels” 2x the load on the cable, so if your theoretical 9000 lb winch is really loaded to 9000 (4.5 tons) and you use a snatch block to get to 18000 (9 tons), you just overloaded your block. In a real world...

People think pulleys increase pulling power.

If you have more than 5 elephants... you shouldn’t need a winch. Just because it is punchy Friday... on a tuesday... I have to say that I always thought a sheave was a bundle of wheat used to stab people in prison... A snatch block... on the other hand... isn’t discussed in polite company...

If properly lubricated, they should be silent, but may then collect dust.

Is there a “Best Of” Expediion Portal? This has to be the single funniest / most frustrating thread I’ve ever seen. I say “drink beer every time you see the word “pulley”, and do a shot every time someone repeats an argument point without quoting it”... please don’t post and drive.

Sewing Thread....A discussion on making your own adventure textile gear.

Agreed on techniques that convert well for heavy fabrics, but there is a lot to be learned in a beginner level class, and that learning is even better in a one-on-one environment. In the end, sewing is similar to welding, all the talk and video in the world won’t help you until you start...

Someone mentioned classes somewhere... Your local fabric stores like JoAnns will have classes, or old ladies that are willing to teach and happy to get money. They always think it is the most fun thing in the world to teach a middle-aged guy to see.
