Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

The foam provides both extra insulation and the stiffness. The panels are just vacuum bagged up by the guy who is doing the interior carpentry. He does a lot of veneer work, and has a big vacuum table for his veneering. I was originally going to use a similar commercial product, but it uses...

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

I have not done as much work as I wanted the last few weeks - first off I have been away "Consulting the Community" at work - and I also got the flu - not pleasant at all. We also had a photo shoot for 4WD Action magazine of the Discovery, which meant I had to spend some time cleaning and...

Amazon rescuers find ravine crash couple in MB Unimog

I'm with Jason on this one - a few snatch blocks and a decent electric rear winch (with enough batteries to power it) . I've got a 7.5 ton winch front and rear, that allows me to "pull through" if the going gets tough, or to chicken out :) I've got 5 Optima 31T 75 AH batteries with 1100CCA...

Suggested campers for bed of U500

I've also read about the 3.5m height on old soviet bridges on a few forums and books. I have not actually seen photos of these bridges though - it would be good if someone with first hand experience can verify this. Even so, I made my Mog 3.3m max height because of that.

Uses for a Mog besides expedition

Making your wife push your mog - there must be a law against that :)

Uses for a Mog besides expedition

If you need a reason to buy a Mog other than just owning a Mog, then you shouldn't buy one :) or to paraphase a famous quote - if you have to ask, you shouldn't get one..

Amazon rescuers find ravine crash couple in MB Unimog

Plenty of other reasons why you should take an 8 ton truck into the jungle - just compare the lifestyle of living next to/on top of your Patrol vs living inside a Mog. I definitely won't be spending two or three driving around the world in a Patrol. Little trucks are good for short trips, not...

    Italian UNIMOG Camper construction

I think the easiest place to tap into the air line would be the circuit for the diff lock / 4wd control that is in the centre gear nest. It would be easy to run the lines up through the gear nest, but you would have to disconnect them each time you tilt the cab, which is not really a big deal...

How much off-road capability is enough?

I bought a Unimog so I get to places that normally only the little cars like Land Rovers and Land cruiser get to - but I can camp with a fair amount of luxury. :)

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

Just a few photos of progress on the bullbar. I got the cardboard models folded up - however the winch support bracket was not delivered so I could not do as much as planned. I decided to get the 10mm plate folded to the right shape, as it would be a lot stronger, however the supplier decided...

Amazon rescuers find ravine crash couple in MB Unimog

I know that if my wife and I were OK physically, I would certainly have started a recovery attempt the next day. I would definitely been a scary thing. I wonder what broke the windscreen - looks like it was something from the inside hitting the screen They said when the got it back it has...

Amazon rescuers find ravine crash couple in MB Unimog

My wife and I looked at the photos last night - I said that at first glance looking at the photos of the bridge I would have driven across it - she said she would not have. I wonder what discussions the two of them had prior to driving over the bridge.

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

Heavy metal part 2 This week I've been concentrating on the front bumper /bullbar. I started working on it, first bending up the top pipe. This is made from 60mm pipe with a 3mm wall thickness - it was very difficult to bend and by the time I had made it, I was stuffed. There are 6 bends in...

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

A quick update. First off the snorkel protector, I only used 26mm tubing as I don't plan on driving full speed into branches. The protector unbolts so I can take the snorkel off. Next was the ladder so give me access to the roof. It was quite a tricky thing to fabricate, each step is made...

    4 season camper project

Hi Janne, I think if you fixed mounted it, even a few speed bumps would put lots of stress on the camper box, I'm surprised how flexible the chassis is on my Mog, even jacking it up in the workshop makes it twist a bit. Mine has a 4 point mounting system - I can put up photos if you want.

    4 season camper project

I listed all the weights on my camper project thread a while ago, and it is heavy - but then it needs to be if you intend on carrying more than 1.5ton of fuel water and stuff. In regards the camper frame - the most important thing is the mounting, the static weight is not the problem, it is the...

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

Thanks for the encouragement. Initially this started out as a 9-12month project. That was more than two years ago and I've given up estimating when it will be finished. Right now, I'm just enjoying building it. I use my Land Rover to keep the travel bug at bay - but when "roughing it" with...

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

A few more photos of my roof rack under construction. The one thing I realised this weekend, is that the first one is always the longest - the first of the front support took hours to figure out, the second was just a simple copy of the first. Similarly the side tubes etc. I have done...
