As for the top... have you asked around on the JCCA site? I know those guys had gotten together to work with a top maker to have some turned out. Not cheap but FWIR the quality was top notch and the actual value comes out in that.

Find an early, pre-emission Waggy with no rust and go from there. You'll have more freedom to upgrade or swap stuff around without the smog nazis breathing down your neck. I'd recommend manual windows as the newer waggys like to have a few issues with power related...

If only we could find a way to break the strangle hold the oil barons hold as well as the misconceptions about diesel... Sigh. Sadly it doesn't become viable to swap to diesel in something your not going to be towing with at this point unless you have the extra $$ to begin brewing your own.
