No experience with most of those antennas but the comet csb is a stiff antenna with a fold-over hinge at the base. It doesn't take kindly to hits but can be folded down to get it out of the way. Doesn't work well when folded though.
It has been discontinued but can be found on eBay pretty often. I don't think any of the current icon line has those specs. I don't buy anything brand new, but if you are wanting new, yaesu or tyt may be the only route
Icom IC-2720H seems like it would work well for you. You seem to have liked the icom interface better than the yaesu--I also think the icoms are more user friendly. The 2720h has a removable/remote mountable faceplate, supports aprs and can cross band repeat. So what? Well, that gives you...
You want just a 2m radio? I don't see a reason to not go with at least a dual band with 70cm and 2m. This will give you some options based on who else is in your group.
Take a look at this link for some good communication information in Alaska. It seems like it may be worthwhile to get a BaoFeng HT or two to toss in the truck as well--obviously illegal to use in the US without a license but that far out in the sticks, I would bring it along as extra...
Unless you want to have a radio hanging off somewhere, I recommend the cobra 75wxst. Compact all in one handset with scan, weather, and dual watch. If you have a spot to put a bigger radio, there are certainly better performing units out there, but they then require the space to mount them...
I'll take the ladder extension. I will be out in WV for the run listed in the SE chapter but if we won't be near each other I am more than happy to have it shipped. Thanks!
Dan
Just curious, have you ever had somebody with a 5w HT actually create enough spurious emissions to interfere with your signal? I'd wager that folks who don't follow the band plan cause more interference to other users than any spurious transmissions from an HT
Super newb here, but I just took a trip down to Jacksonville, FL from Virginia Beach and did the following:
1. Didn't bother with looking up repeaters along I-95. Driving at 75 mph means you are in range of a repeater for 40 min max and there typically isn't anything to listen to anyway. I did...
Thanks! I have been listening in to any net that I can receive and have checked into the public service net on a few occasions. Steadily learning things!
Sounds like a good plan.

That link has two radios and 3 antennas for 30 dollars. Chances of getting a working setup on the cheap are very good...
Thanks!
Impressive! I felt like an 8th grade algebra student taking an advanced calculus test. I don't have any plans to retake the extra exam. I don't foresee ever bumping up against the limits of the general... Still fiddling with the radios and learning things. Figured out today that...
Seems like you could mount it under the vent controls to keep it a little stealthy or up above the radio for ease of use. I have my TYT faceplate mounted above my radio in the cruiser and I like it there. Easy enough to unsnap it from the mount and lock it up if in a sketchy area. I'll post a...
SuperNewb Ham here, but I read your post to mean that you want to do more on 2m/70cm than you are able to do with the hand held. As mentioned, the antenna is the biggest bang for your buck. If you want to go with a more capable radio (transmission modes, features, power, mounting, etc) then I...
