Exploiting a large alternator via battery-to-battery chargers?

Do the maths both ways. If you need a B2B to protect your alternator from the demands of a large lithium bank any way, then it may be more effective to use a B2B that can reduce voltage at the same time. Check also the cost of a 24v vs, 12v inverter/charger. In my case, the 40A REDARC has...

Exploiting a large alternator via battery-to-battery chargers?

Eaton (and probably others) sell "equalizers: that will act as a step down transformer. 100A may or may not be adequate for your needs...

Exploiting a large alternator via battery-to-battery chargers?

Would agree with this. My truck was wired backwards, that is, a 24v to 13.5v "equalizer" on the charging side. With lead acid, this would assure perpetually undercharged batteries. But with a 24v camper bank, a 13.5v equalizer would provide perfect voltage for your "12v" loads. I didn't have the...

Exploiting a large alternator via battery-to-battery chargers?

Edited to add: 70A @ 12v is a LOT of power. Typical all electric campers - that is induction stove, microwave, refrigerator, etc. can expect to use between 75Ah to 125Ah depending on weather. Hot weather increases demand from the refrigerator, cold weather pulls power to run your heater motor...

Exploiting a large alternator via battery-to-battery chargers?

24v to 12v is tricky. I suspect that you can parallel Sterling Power units - ask 'em. I know that you can parallel REDARC units - I did ask 'em. When it comes to charging, the advantage of lithium is that the internal voltage tends to remain constant and thus the battery will take its charge at...

Traction boards for the big trucks?

Consider Go Treads. They demo them with a tractor trailer. ( https://gotreads.com/field-test/ ) They fold up for storage. https://gotreads.com/

Low BTU AC options ---> turned cheapo 5kBTU install in the Idacamper2.0

The thru-wall unit should meet all of my concerns. Wish I had known they existed. Good luck!

Low BTU AC options ---> turned cheapo 5kBTU install in the Idacamper2.0

I am only familiar with A/C's like your second picture - ones that pull from the side or top. Does the A/C in your first picture pull from the back? Or is there space between sleeve and the A/C itself?

    Recirculating Showers?

As mentioned, we started out traveling with nothing for weeks on end. The face you make when you discover that that you have just used the last of the water for laundry and you still have to fix dinner. We love our hot showers and spend months in the camper without ever having the need...

Low BTU AC options ---> turned cheapo 5kBTU install in the Idacamper2.0

Hard for me to really comment without seeing the A/C in the hole. I burned up a few A/C's before I realized that Provan had not made provision for fresh air feed to the condenser - that fan pulls a LOT of air from the sides and top, depending you your model. And you probably can't get it from...

Low BTU AC options ---> turned cheapo 5kBTU install in the Idacamper2.0

Free advice from one who has been there and replaced window units. Looking at your picture, I believe that you need MUCH more ventilation to the condenser side. I would recommend opening the roof and covering with a solar panel. (With a proper water dam and possibly a screen as well.) Don't ask...

    Recirculating Showers?

Beloved Spouse, the cat, and I use about 10 USG of fresh water a day when running full motorhome/RV style. That is eating, drinking, cooking, and showering. As to the rest, watch all of the videos and draw your own conclusions. I'm not going to spend any energy attacking or defending this...

    Recirculating Showers?

Watched all of the videos. Very clever, but a lot of work and expense for little benefit. The primary benefit is an unlimited hot shower, that is, not a "military" or "camper" shower where you turn the water on and off. That is nice, but the price is high. In their experience they dump the ten...

    best charging method?

Look at the owner‘s manual. Typically you can expect a DC-DC charger to draw about 20% more than its output. My 40A charger fuses at 60A.

    best charging method?

It doesn’t. A DC-DC charger trades extra amps for higher voltage - that is, it will take in more amps than it produces, but it can produce those amps at a higher voltage. That is why DC-DC chargers have low(er) outputs. You must still wire properly, that it, heavy enough, for a DC-DC charger to...

Understanding Battery separators versus battery isolators, for charging via a car alternator.

Dude, you are WAY overthinking/worrying this. I have a all electric camper, my second, and blow through and recover around 125Ah a night. My Chevrolet with a 200A alternator set and my Mercedes with a 100A/24v alternator (and B2B) have handled these loads easily, for years. I do have a healthy...
