How is the idle controlled on a 2003+ (3.8L) Gen3 Monty?

Does your Montero cut off at stop without the a/c running?

How is the idle controlled on a 2003+ (3.8L) Gen3 Monty?

I have another thread on here called "A Story about Slaying Electrical Gremlins" that details more of the process I've followed concerning this issue. Long story short it isn't in the throttle body. The previous owner's mechanic replaced that in a jack-legged attempt to fix the problem. There...

COOPER DISCOVERER: Middle-earth by Montero...with Four Kids

The 2nd Portion “I am almost inclined to set it up as a canon that a children’s story which is enjoyed only by children is a bad children’s story.” - C.S. Lewis Fool of a Took! This little hobbit guy named Peregrin Took once said, “The closer we are to danger, the farther we are from harm.”...

Cooper Discoverer: Backing Down Elephant Hill for Love

Electrical gremlins...haha. Gotta slay them things (though easier said than done on our Monteros). It's awesome how the bigness of this world, almost as if by design, has a way of inspiring gratitude in us. Great story.

COOPER DISCOVERER: Middle-earth by Montero...with Four Kids

I was hoping to finish up writing this story before our next trip, but it'll have to wait until we get back. See you next week.

COOPER DISCOVERER: Middle-earth by Montero...with Four Kids

Middle-earth by Montero...with Four Kids The Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia April 26-30, 2016 Are they too young? Are they too many? Kids are a difficult variable in the "adventuring by vehicle" equation. Typically you throw two adults in a four-wheel drive with a paper map and a free weekend...

A story about slaying electrical gremlins.

I checked into it and as I feared we're reading from two different FSMs about two different animals, my 3.8L w/all its electronic sorcery and your 3.5L w/all its mechanical dodads. My PCM runs the show paying close attention to the ECT (engine coolant temperature) sensor, various air flow...

A story about slaying electrical gremlins.

I'll check for that later. Thanks for the tip. I'm pretty sure though that after 2003 when they went to the 3.8 everything idle related became logic based and computer controlled. I don't have any of your typical mechanical idle devices (IAC motor, TPS, etc.). The throttle body itself is...

Adjust the idle...How do you do that? I never saw anything like that in the FSM. Everything I could gather pointed to the PCM controlling everything with the idle...and short of having a MUT-III scanner there isn't much I can do there.

A story about slaying electrical gremlins.

Well, been trying to find the time to post an update. Here goes... The internet hasn't been much help with things, but it did provide me with a copy of the Factory Service Manual. It, in a round-about way has shed a lot of light on how this machine is supposed to work. I dove into it with my...

2003+ Idle Relearn Procedure for 3.8L Montero

10-4 on that one. Found the three different procedures in the FSM and picked up a test light plus my Fluke. Hoping to start probing around soon.

2003+ Idle Relearn Procedure for 3.8L Montero

Sorry I haven't said thank you for the replies. Life has been a little overwhelming and honestly haven't had time to mess with this issue much. I did remove the throttle body and clean it up (it wasn't that bad)...did the EGR valve too for kicks and giggles. I'm wary of cleaning the MAF since...

2003+ Idle Relearn Procedure for 3.8L Montero

I know how to make it forget. :) Trying to help it RELEARN a proper idle the right way rather than the hard way (which is me sitting in traffic with the ac on stalling out constantly because it hasn't yet figured out that 450 rpm ain't gonna cut it).

2003+ Idle Relearn Procedure for 3.8L Montero

Does anybody have or know where I can find the correct idle relearn procedure for a 2003+ 3.8L Montero? I've been looking through my Factory Service Manual and can't find it mentioned. I've found a few TSBs online but they are for overseas models (GDI and Diesel variants)...and they're all...

    oil pressure high

If you didn't notice any changes in the way the truck sounded, drove, felt, (smelt?) I would put my .02 on the OPSU. Had the same thing happen to me with my Cherokee. Gauge spiked, but the Jeep didn't act abnormal. Replaced the sender and all was well. Very easy fix for even the white belts like me.

2003 Montero Limited: Yaw Rate Sensor Replacement?

Which light are you referring to? Do you mean the Center Differential Light (CDL) on the 4wd Indicator or are you referring to a warning light up above the speedo? If it is the CDL there is a simple DIY trick to reading the fault codes you can do yourself so you don't need to take it back to a...

2003 Montero Limited: Yaw Rate Sensor Replacement?

I may not be the best resource, but... #1: Not yet, but at the rate I'm going with my '03 probably will before too long... #2: If I had the tool I'd try it myself. Procedure in the FSM looks as simple as letting the scan tool do a quick calibration (5 steps, well 1 really with 2 being...

A story about slaying electrical gremlins.

At my work I'm young enough to be everybody's kid. I'm the only one under forty so I'm the shop's token whipper-snapper or whatever they call it. They quip at me with puberty jokes and I hit back with social security filing forms in their lockers. We have a good time. But being young(er) means...

A story about slaying electrical gremlins.

That family road trip is a tale for another thread, but as it pertains to this story suffice it to say we made it home safe, sound, and very satisfied. Four straight days of dense fog and rain meant that we were forced to put more volts on tap than I planned, but with a steady eye on the voltage...
