    FUGGLY

Fuggly's mechanical overhaul was put on the backburner repeatedly after multiple issues with other family vehicles. Stuff I tackled recently while waiting: - Upper and lower radiator hoses - Radiator - Coolant - Thermostat - Rear diff fluid (Mitsu LSD oil) - Front diff fluid (Redline 75W90...

Front end/steering vibration on gen 3 montero

Did any of you ever resolve your vibration issues? If so, how? New wheels? Spacers? Tires? Suspension components? I ask because my ‘01 XLS (with 285/75/16 Treadwrights and cheap 1” Orion/eBay wheel spacers installed by PO) has a strong vibration over 35 mph or so — strong enough to jiggle the...

    Overheating/Gauge Puzzle

Hope it helps you, Igor. Sure did the trick for me...though truth be told the bleeder screws likely accomplish the same thing. I'm still juggling the "too good" thermostat function, though, so I'll likely spring for an OEM thermostat per suggestions above.

    Overheating/Gauge Puzzle

Thanks again, I'll check bleeder screws and consider an OEM thermostat.

    Overheating/Gauge Puzzle

Thanks for the replies. I installed a Motorad Failsafe thermostat. I understand the assumption may be that the engine is overheating and the new thermostat remains open but I’ve watched the gauge carefully the last few days and it has never crept above the halfway mark. Of course, that could...

    Overheating/Gauge Puzzle

My new (to me) 2001 Gen 3 XLS is running well all things considered. I'm still amazed at the overall capability and quality given what I paid for it. However, I have had fits with overheating (and possibly faux overheating). Ever since we got the vehicle the needle would bounce up to the highest...

Quality wheel spacers for Gen 3

Offroad much, did you ever purchase and install the German-made spacers you reference above? And if so, how do you like them?

    Gen 3 replacement alternator?

jeep-N-montero, I took the Monty by Autozone and they checked battery and alternator. Both checked out fine. I'm not convinced that alternator is OK but I am starting to suspect ignition switch (though I don't see reports of that being an issue in Gen 3s). I crawled under the truck and confirmed...

    Gen 3 replacement alternator?

My wife drove our new-to-us 2001 Montero XLS this evening and called to report that the dash had filled up with lights like a Christmas tree – – brake light, a/t light, check engine light, the whole nine. Runs fine, though. She also told me that the truck has refused to start several times over...

    Igor's 2002 Montero gen 3 build

Igor, thanks for sharing. Great stuff. Your Monty looks beefy and well-balanced and is serving as inspiration for by own build-up. I'm struggling with rubbing issues (285/75/16) so it's good to know that you made an even bigger tire work.

normal_dave, that thread is full of awesome. Even though it addresses common problems with the Gen3 the general consensus in the discussion is that they are criminally underrated vehicles...which is what I want to hear after plunking down cash for one. Michal, OEM LDS fluid will go in the rear...

    SAG, JIGGLE and RUB

Thanks, Dave. Good advice, and I will be doing what you propose. Just had an exchange with Adam at ADD. Good dude who outlined some of the options they offer for springs. Also picked up a new crank bolt and washer from him. I'll check out the Lovell Springs. Good to hear that they're available...

    SAG, JIGGLE and RUB

I have a sorta-kinda build thread in here but I'm creating this new discussion since I'd like to poll the resident heavyweights in regards to three specific issues. I have three concerns re: my (new to me) 2001 Gen 3 XLS: 1) a saggy ***-end and 2) a pretty good vibration at 30-50 MPH that shakes...

Good to know that I can address both resistors in one shot. I'll study up on the suggested approach and tackle it within a week or so. I appreciate the tip.

    Basket Case '03 Monty Purchased

Congrats on the purchase, Corprin. Sure you didn't melt that diff as an excuse to drop in a hybrid LSD? Your secret is safe with us. :sombrero: Recently bought an older Monty myself so I'm fighting a learning curve. I'll be tracking your progress. Post some pics when you free up the time.

Thanks, nnam, for the perspective. I'm sure your buddy is knowledgeable and correct. However, I'm going to stick with the OEM LSD fluid this time around since I have yet to hear anything but good things about the stuff. The list of maintenance-related items has grown to obscene levels. I've...

    FUGGLY

Thanks, nnam. Trying to clean her up a bit. Hey, I want to confirm what the diff specialist you know said re: best/safest fluid for the hybrid/hyblid diff. After several recommendations from folks in here I purchased this OEM fluid for the rear diff...

    FUGGLY

My modest build has been delayed a bit given the need to replace my son's front axle. I'll be painting the one I just nabbed from a local pick-a-part with Permatex then primer later today, then replacing both ujoints before it goes back to shop. But I have found some time to fiddle with the Fug...

    FUGGLY

Thanks very much, Dave. Extremely useful. The writeup by coffeegoat is pure gold. I've done a helluva lot of digging in this forum but somehow I managed to dance around that spreadsheet until now. Crap. Good news is that the parts I've already ordered are pretty consistent with his choices...

    FUGGLY

I'm sure you're right, nnam. The gasket set I mentioned above has the cam seal o-rings above. My biggest issue (as a relative Mitsu noob) has been distinguishing between quality parts and sub-par parts since OEM is not always readily available. Unlike other more common brands it seems that...
