I hate picking colors and I was thinking this color was too light blue but I'm glad I stuck with it. Luckily the primer coat had a few days in the sun before the rain so I think it'll be OK. With that said, most of the cars, trucks and motorcycles I've painted get babied and stored inside so...
I started with a DA sander and 150 grit and then used 2 coats of 2K Urethane primer surfacer which is high build and sands really nicely. I used the DA with 400 grit and some wet sanding with 600 on the primer and then top coated with single stage Omni MTK Urethane. Once it cures for a while...
Now that the build thread is basically up to date here's what I've been doing for the past week. Not the ideal setup but at least it turned out pretty OK.
After priming and sanding the whole thing I started with the inner doors and jams and then painted the top and back.
Then this...
All pics up to this point were from last summer. It was parked all winter because I don't have anyplace indoors to work on it. This spring I pulled the camper box and moved it into my garage so I can focus on getting the truck done over the summer. Main projects have been the interior in which...
Well I can't find the rest of the lift jack build pics so here's a little fast forward to them in action.
I'm not gonna lie. This made me a little nervous.
Still need to do some testing when the camper is done and fully loaded but I'm fairly confident they'll work.
The jacks will...
Here's what I came up with for the jacks. Everything I could find on the market seamed cheaply made and overly expensive so I made my own. I could have gone electric for power hydraulic but I liked the simplicity and availability of off the shelf bottle jacks.
Sometimes it's nice to buy the...
At this point I had the exterior of the camper skinned and mostly done so I started working on the mounting. I decided on a 3 point design using a gooseneck ball and coupler in the rear and (2) 2" balls up front. The plan is to make the camper box removable so the truck is more versatile. More...
I suppose it's like any commercial sized truck. If something big breaks it's going to be expensive. The good thing is the engine, trans, axles, brakes, air system are all common in the non-military market so parts are available over the counter.
6-8 is about right. It is what it is. As far as...
In the rear I added a compartment that will hold the 3 batteries, 3000 watt inverter and hydraulic lift pump.
Now we're getting into the fun stuff. I decided to make a 270 degree awning that will fit across the back to cover the holes where the trailer lights were. I still need access...
Originally for the camper I was going to keep it simple and just buy an old box truck or U-Haul box and drop it on the frame and go. I would totally be done by now if I had... but I didn't. I wanted something different, more versatile and ultimately more fun to build so here's what I ended up...
Yes they do. I think a lot of it is due to years of neglect and sitting around. Any truck that is 20 years old even with only 5000 miles would need some work. If you read thru the Steel Soldiers forum that B85 posted you'll get the idea. The good thing is those guys really know what they're...
A quick note about rock crawling before I get into the camper part of the build... The CTIS system is awesome and these trucks will climb just about any grade hill but they definitely need a rear locker and I found it's not quite big enough to go anywhere I wanted. It sure was fun to try...
The city only needs to keep them for a year. I bought mine from the guy who won it from the city auction. Still had the TN Gov plates on it. He made it sound like they do it fairly often. He actually won 2 LMTVs and resold them.
Yep.. I'm over there often. Don't post much but read the forum daily. I have the high speed gears (not installed yet) so it would be nice to get a locker so I can do it all at once. There's already a Detroit style locker available so if the air locker doesn't happen I'll just go that route.
UPDATE:
It was a tough decision but I've decided it's time to sell this project :(. Just got too many other things going on and not enough time or space for this.
Since my last update here I've added A/C, new tires and did a bunch of work to the interior. The truck is mostly done but the...
