You can fit a 2nd stock 58gal LMTV tank right behind the existing tank. Shouldn't be hard to find one on Ebay or one of the guys over at http://www.steelsoldiers.com/forumdisplay.php?75-FMTV
Yep that's most likely 720 miles since new. There's no way to verify it since these trucks tend to get parts taken off and/or swapped out before being auctioned but it's probably accurate. The miles on these can vary a lot but I'd say normal is 4k-10k.
There's a big floor mat but it doesn't do much for sound deadening. There's nothing on the roof or back wall. You definitely need ear plugs for highway driving. The ride is great though.
An over cab box isn't really an option but you could slide the camper back and have the over cab portion...
Now this is my kind of project. I'm currently working on a Hi Lo LMTV build and have many of the same thoughts as you.
I plan on making the camper removable so I can unload it at the campsite and still use the truck and also so I can build other beds/modules for it.
I have the higher gears...
