Very good point. I've wondered about that...in my perfect world, I'd love to have a custom aluminum bumper fabbed up with 80% of the bumper being aluminum, mostly the plate surfaces that would wrap around the rear fender. The framework bearing the weight of the tire carrier would be made of...
a spare 31" should fit in the stock location...my plan is upgrade to 31"x10.5x15's for the same reasons LaOutbackTrail mentioned. Call me aluminum crazy, but I'm really curious about a rear multicarrier made out of aluminum. The weight savings are pretty hard to ignore and after paying for a...
Wouldn't that be summer of 2011? We're driving down to TDF from Texas, then driving the return trip all the way back to the Pacific NW...so during the last leg of the trip we'll decide if we will have the time for Canada and Alaska. I hope so, but we'll see where life takes us.
If your budget...
You're crazy if you want to take an old 4runner to South America...
Just kidding. My GF and I are preparing for a very similar trip in a very similar rig. When do you plan on starting your journey? The earliest we're leaving is January 2012. Maybe instead of investing in a heavy bumper/winch...
Didn't realize you were in Auburn. Small world, my uncle lives about 30 minutes west of you, down 410 overlooking Commencement Bay (lucky guy). I guess you could say that's my base camp on the west side of the mountains.
Unfortunately, now vehicles cannot make it past the ranger station at the...
I completely agree. I was trying not to sound like "one of them" and I hope it didn't seem like I was calling you out. I was just saying you had good reasons for having such a nice setup that you stated before. I just hope after a few years I will have a rig that everyone will drool over...
Take another look at Aires35's comment. It's easy to forget while we're "roughing it" with warm Zodi showers, enjoying beautifully exotic locations while our troops are overseas in less than desirable conditions. I understand feeling it's gross to go more than a day or two without showers, so I...
Genius!
Thanks Lance, I know I've heard their name somewhere but I totally forgot about it. Still curious if anyone has an idea how much it would cost if I went thru a local fabricator...
Just curious if anyone has seen a heavy duty bumper, multi-carrier, or rear tire carrier made from aluminum?
I try really hard to stay on the lighter side with any upgrades I do with my truck. The 4cyl REALLY appreciates this effort! I recently scored a Hannibal freelander rack which is bigger...
Good advice, I've thought it over some and you have a good point. Got this idea from a coworker who's used one in his jeep with no problems, but I'd hate to be "that guy" who runs into problems and becomes a statistic...
When you say "pretty cheap" used certified bottles, how cheap is cheap...
you're right, once the hydrotest is expired they've gotta go...that's why I get one. We have a cascade system and I can personally fill the bottles myself. I honestly wouldn't try and fill all the way to 4500, but I could maybe get two bottles and fill each to like 3000 and not have to worry...
I thought of doing the same thing...I'm trying to get one of the old training scba's from the academy (it's what's used in the fire service). Supposedly they get rid of the old ones on occasion. Our bottles are 4500psi carbon fiber so they take a beating. Supposedly I can remove one regulator...

I've been looking into this, but haven't picked one up yet. I'll have to write up an expo thread on it once I do...very cheap alternative. Even if it takes me 5 min. per tire!
junkyard Cadillac compressor
I found this pretty interesting:

"So how long does it take to fill up the tank and fill up the tires?
Tire, (1) 32x11.5 inch Pirelli Scorpion AT :
It takes 5 mins to fill from 10 PSI to 32 PSI."
For $20-30 bucks I'd say...
Oops, my bad. I overlooked that detail.
Yep, we officially gave it the green light a couple months ago and we've started planning and preparing the truck. The plan is to wait two years so we have plenty of money to work with...The trip will most likely start at the beginning of 2012, roughly...
http://ramblewriter.com/ This couple from North Carolina inspired me to prep my 1st gen 4runner for a Pan Am adventure. They've been writing a book of their travels, but I'm not sure if it's finished yet.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think these blogs are from the couple who started...
Not mine, Not affiliated. just thought this would be cool for someone to make a Sportsmobile out of a different vehicle...would be an interesting project with that old truck topper you have sitting around.
