1997 Wrangler Overland Build - Road to Anchorage

Well a few things have changed recently! I had a guy make me an offer on the TJ that I couldn't refuse. Ended up making enough to pay myself back, plus pick up the Cherokee below, plus have a few dollars to spare. It's a: 4.0 liter Ax15 manual Chrysler 8.25 rear Bone stock. 165k miles...

1997 Wrangler Overland Build - Road to Anchorage

Going to pick this up tomorrow! Normally I would shy away from a 3-1 combo machine but this is one of the biggest machines ever made. Huge 20" swing on the Lathe. And I can fit full bellhousings or transfer cases or diff housings on the mill. CNC ready if I pick up some motors for it. With...

Excellent to hear. I was a little nervous after driving it. Especially after loading it up. Thanks for helping to ease my mind a bit!

Put about 50 miles on it up here at 9000+ ft in the mountains. Cruises great. Can even use 5th gear with the 31's. ....But... Any kind of incline and I'm grabbing 4th or 3rd. mostly 6-8% grades out here so I had it screaming at 60mph in 3rd. I think it'll suffice. Shifting doesn't bother me...

1997 Wrangler Overland Build - Road to Anchorage

Good to hear! Took it around the block today to get it warmed up and set the fan controller. Not exactly the 400+ horsepower of the jeep next to it... I think it'll suffice. Now comes the fun part of interior mods and getting it ready!

The Ultra4 is missing a heart. Found some unhealthy metal flakes in the filter. Gotta tear through the motor now. Got a start on he rear tire carrier. I'm going to call this the Recycle TJ. Or maybe the Craigslist TJ. I've been sourcing all the needed "large" parts from Craigslist. aka the...

1997 Wrangler Overland Build - Road to Anchorage

Got sidetracked today and asked to help rescue some kids that thought running slaughterhouse gulch in Stock vehicles with bald tires would be a good idea. :Wow1: On another note, my time table might be moved up to this summer for a nice long roadtrip due to "family planning". AKA Wife isn't...

It Runs! And on all four cylinders, can't ask much more than that. So for less than $1800 I have a running and driving TJ with 150k on the ticker. Still need to do a few maintenance items like check brakes and eventually tires, but it is a great start to our expedition truck. Next step is to...

1997 Wrangler Overland Build - Road to Anchorage

I'm going to dig into it and see. I made a huge score this week and cleaned out a guy's garage of TJ parts for next to nothing. Spare shafts, stock springs, 5.5" rear loft springs, spare steering linkages, hi-lift, calipers, rotors, etc. Just tons of stuff needed to piece this thing...

I went with the Robo3D. One of the largest areas per dollar. I also wanted an assembled one a time is short. I got the need for printing ABS. I have so many things up that it'll be printing for months straight. Favorite so far is a roll cage clamp flashlight holder that holds two of the harbor...

Tore the head off the motor to find a tuliped intake valve. Looks like root cause was a broken intake/exhaust manifold bolt that likely caused #3 to burn hot and thus tuliping the valve. New head is on the way. Quick hone and new rings and it'll be driving again. I took off the gawd-awful...

1997 Wrangler Overland Build - Road to Anchorage

So I splurged a little and finally ordered my 3D Printer. Really excited. There are a whole boatload of things I have designed to make my life easier; flashlight holders, phone holders, clips, tubing clamp brackets for lights, etc that are a pain to fab up out of metal. Looking forward to...

Really good info. Thanks! I'm really debating a low profile teardrop. We don't need a whole lot of room to sleep. A lot of the teardrops I see are pretty tall. I hope to run a few aerodynamic studies on a lower profile version. Basically enough to crawl into and lay down two people wide. Then...

We will tent the majority of it. Probably catch a hotel or two for a shower or laundry. I am seriously considering a small expedition trailer with sleeping accommodations too. Just to save effort compared to setup and tear down of a tent each day.

Nothing yet! I'm a sales engineer for Eaton and am on the road for good periods. I left Monday morning and just got back home tonight. Compression leak down tester was here waiting for me. Hopfully tomorrow I'll figure out if it's rings or valves. I'm having a hard time NOT going full...

I would normally agree 100%. All of my CJ's in the past have had hard tops and man are they nice. But on this trip I want to be able to drop the top and enjoy the drive. After this trip though, hardtop is priority! Great to hear about all the miles on the 2.5L. I think I am going to freshen it...

You bring up a very interesting point. I've gone back and forth on this topic. Part of me wants to rebuild and return to stock, and part wants to swap in a 4.0L. The thing I'm facing right now is trying to find a TJ 4.0L harness. Next to impossible.

Hi Mike! Correct! We are heading inland to pick up the Highway after crossing into Canada. I just said coast meaning we'll head up through Vancouver then head in. Good point on the RV 's. Last drive I did up to Alaska there were hardly any RV 's. Guess things have changed in 20 years You...

Morning everyone! Longtime lurker around here. Finally decided I should register to join the community and continue to absorb all the knowledge here! I currently race Ultra4 in a "Jeep" in the EMC class. (Technically it has a few feet of frame rail and a Vin Tag...so I still call it a Jeep.)...
