Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

Right. That's how I have it. Then I'm grounded. Everything works. I'll try that. I think I have a nice fat wire even.

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

That's what I thought. I'm either using the clamp wrong or something is running that shouldn't be.

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

As far as I can tell, it is. Pretty clearly marked, one side for the battery and the other side for everything else. I think it's pretty clear I don't know what to expect...totally out of my element with electrical stuff. :) Also realized that while the accessory items like the lights and...

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

Update: Had to go out of town for work and didn't get much done. I got a clamp meter and tried some initial measurements but it didn't make much sense. Everything is showing amps but nothing matches what the monitor says is being drawn. Meanwhile the voltage is still 13.5 ish and the charger...

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

    Bank is 2 6v 245 amp FLA batteries. So a 12v 245 amp system.

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

So last night, with the monitor showing 64% charge, the light on the IOTA charger indicated it was in float. I unplugged the shore power, no change. The inverter and monitor both showed 13.7V. I unhooked the bank, and hooked it back up. Suddenly the monitor shows 100% charge. I unhooked the IQ...

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

I'll power the Iota down and fire it back up tonight. I have the regular IQ, I went with FLA batteries. The voltage is still over 13, maybe the monitor is just confused...? It says it's been synchronized once but if I did that I didn't meant to. All the installed components say the factory...

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

Well the adventure continues. Despite being on shore power the voltage is down in the 13 range and there is a steady 2.7 amp draw. Battery monitor says I'm down to about 65% as of this morning. Is the charger going to kick in at some point or is it waiting for me to tell it what to do? I don't...

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

I had specifically turned off the main switch so the inverter couldn't do that...assuming I hooked them up right. When you say through a full cycle, are we talking about running the batteries down and charging them back up? Or just getting to full charge and then telling the monitor it's at 100%?

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

So...Last night I hooked everything up. I elected to run the charger and solar to the battery, and everything else to the main cutoff switch. The monitor is working and networked with the MPPT. Both updated themselves through the app (or the app updated itself, I'm not sure). Point is...

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

Plans derailed when my refrigerator died. But I got it all together. Update tomorrow.

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

OK, some progress and some setbacks. The MPPT is in. I assume it's working but with no sunlight in the garage...could be? The blue light is flashing and the app connected and updated ok. I hooked everything up and the charger seemed to work ok (the IOTA doesn't do much to let you know what's...

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

If I were really smart I'd put the power in the Jeep. We tend to park the trailer and foray out from there, and occasionally a Mountain Home meal off the tailgate would be nice too. But in the mornings, two bowls of oatmeal, rinse the bowls/cups, and on the road means car heat for her. I keep...

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

I agree, and we have that option. But what we've found is that two things my wife doesn't do well with are cold and early mornings. Since our breakfasts are almost always handled by adding hot water, I don't have to drag anything out, set up, etc. Two bowls, two mugs, hot water, and stay at...

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

Yeah standby draw is something I just learned about in a youtube video last night while trying to educate myself. But...I think what I really need to do is test my existing one and see what it's actually putting out. I intend to test it this weekend and go from there. It's supposed to be 1500W...

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

That's what I thought. So I'm getting a little ahead of myself, but who makes a good inverter? Am I understanding this right, that I want one of a higher wattage than whatever items I want to run off the AC power?

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

Spot on. But now that I know what they are called, a quick amazon search shows IEC male to edison female adapters for about $7. One thing I'm a fan of is modifying things in such a way that if I bungle it or ever just want to switch back, I can. And this way I'm capable for both in the future...

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

Whelp, first obstacle encountered...(second if you include my own ignorance). The female plug coming from my shore power isn't a standard plug. It looks similar, but is smaller, like the ones they used to plug into computer towers. Is that something I can get an adapter for or do I need a new...

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

Yeah I was looking at both options. Called IOTA and they said either is fine, no technical reasons not to do either, and their customers have done both. Working on mounting the unit now.

Questions about trailer solar systems and charging off the tow vehicle, and shore power

The Iota and IQ4 module have arrived and according to the manual, can be mounted in any orientation provided they have sufficient clearance, which they will. Installation instructions are vague...Do I want this plugged into the bank directly, or to the main cutoff switch? AC input is obvious...
