You could probably save a lot of effort and just stuff some rags in between the mattress and where the velcro flaps down. As of yet I haven't had any issues with mine in that regard.

I know you're speaking to the OP, but in my case it's not all that cold most days, and we got the Montero when it was still warm and it was already doing it. I have a 97 Z71 that gets sluggish in cold weather, but the Monteros issue is constant.

Mine is Jan of 18. It has the ground welds, but too new to have any cracks yet, or it may never crack for all I know. It did come with the updated kitchen drawer. I received mine and put it together at the end of July.

When I looked at my scout, it looked like it was welded and ground flat/smooth. I plan on doing something just for peace of mind. My thought is that maybe trying to make it nice and smooth may have taken too much material away, combined with perhaps too thin of wall for the load on that area...
