i'm a big fan of the tinytrak, it doesn't require a computer, simple to hook up and hide in the dash. The downfall is that it is one way, that is it will only send aprs data not recieve it

i'll try to make it, our local ARES chapter has control of the node i can acess most of sunday, i'm working on building my own node to fix this problem, hope to make it!
you can also generate a e-field from a coiled power cable. Similar to a magnet or inductor. At 12v it takes a fair amount of "wraps" but for the most part you want to avoid this.
