While I wait for the weather to improve to paint the frame I have stated to layout the water tank. It’s a 25 gal tank and should sit pretty close to the suspension. I found this nice rubber boot mat that I will place under it to keep it from rubbing on the floor. The tank will get held in the...
After some additional feedback from users on another forum I decided to extended the tongue to the 3rd support and add a few corner gussets to ensure we stay solid on the trails. Some will say it over built while others will question the design, but I am pretty happy with how it turned out. I...
I had an initial design where I wasn’t using external fenders and I was building it into the trailer. Ultimately to extend it was going to cost a lot more in aluminum So I simplified it. the the rear one I will put a propane tank on outrigger
This past weekend I started to frame up the aluminum container. Most of it is riveted using angle I cut as corner braces. welding would have certainly been faster. Now that I have the frame square I will start to add cross members and get ready for siding. My plan is to attach the aluminum...
After choosing to have the floor extend over each of the outriggers I decided to finish the edge with a piece of thin 2x2 angle iron. Instead of mitering the angles I bent and welded them. This gave a smooth radius with no sharp edges.
I think it gives it a nice finished look while adding a...
After a bit of a wait and $200 my steel floor finally came in and I got it installed.
Before I welded the floor to the trailer I primed all the surfaces where the two metals touch. I hope this provided a bit of protection if any water gets up between the two.
As soon as my steal floor arrives so I can weld it to frame I will start to prep for paint. I decided to prime the trailer with Eastwoods Epoxy Primer and Catalyst. I plan to scuff the whole thing with 3M scuff pads then degrease the whole surface. Still researching best way to degrease it...
Based on a few comments from another post I decided to add an additional 2 x 2 crossbar just do ensure no twisitng of the frame with the timbren suspension.
The rails on the trailer are 2x3x.120 steel. From what I have read as long as you use a 2x2 steel cross support like I have In the photo I should be ok without custom hangers. I could certainly add another 2x2 towards the tail of the suspension.
So I’m about done welding up my trailer frame and I’m trying to decide which will provide the best protection…. having it powder coated or having it sprayed with POR 15 and some top coat. Another trailer I started I primed with 2K primer and then used raptor bedliner. Sadly I wasn’t happy with...
Today i was able to get the left side of the Timbren suspension installed. Right is marked and I will drill it in the morning. I still need to swap the standard hub for disk brake hub. I had this suspension in another trailer I stared but never finished.
I decided to place the tail lights flush with the rear bumper. I found these nice led ones that go inside of a rubber gasket. I drilled (2) 2.5” holes and will cut the middle out tomorrow. I have a pair of red ones and a pair of white ones. Just not sure if I want to install the white ones yet.
Today I got the front riggers welded on to the frame. I think they look good and will provide some additional protection for the tires and fenders. They will also give me a nice step for getting to the roof rack.
Just curious what people think is a better approach. I’m thinking about putting a receiver on the rear of the trailer. The question I have is should I install it through the 4 inch rear bumper or below it? The rear bumper is .120 in thickness
So today doesn’t look like much progress but I got most of the tacks welded and both the front and back outrigger pieces welded up. After a lot of internal debate I decided to go with one by one. The rear one will hold a propane tank and the front ones are just to protect the tires and fenders...
As I start to weld up my trailer I could use some advice. Before I close up all of the ends, should I be running my wires inside of the frame or should I weld on some tabs so I can run the wires on the underside? Should I be applying any time of metal protection to the insides of the tubing...
