Well as a near(ish) term buyer of a 4x4 Class C on a 5500 chassis I'm concerned! And the RV manufacturer in question is also concerned. So much so they are likely to move to Ford F550/600. So now I sit back and wait with popcorn in hand and park my $$ until there is some clarity in the market...

The other challenge may be that you can't get motorhome financing vs having a commercial chassis and then adding a box on top. Plates, insurance etc can be a challenge. One of many reasons we elected to move on from a custom imported box and back to a manufactured motorhome brand.

Where is the closest dealer that can and will service the truck? For around here RAM dealers are disappearing left and right. That means parts support and repair will go 3rd party. Not always a bad thing, but something to pay attention to. Also GM seats suck for me. Ford are good and RAM...

The tow capacity and range extender options are the winner here. And eventually when the batteries get better range they'll just kill that option. Tow a Bruder or such behind and you've got a pretty sweet set up. Excess solar can be back charged into the truck when at camp and when driving.

My guess is the independent part was a deliberate move by VW. No technical debt by having to use some other division's nuts and bolts etc. VW is way behind on the EV front. This allows them to steal parts and tech back into other brands. IE anyone not think an EV Atlas will be born out...

That's the root issue though... 1000's of low margin vehicles vs 10's of 1000s high margin vehicles (with bells and whistles). the stripper Jeep you describe is great for Uni kids, off roaders, and any motorhome owner with a 5k hitch on the back for a TOAD. My guess is the total addressable...

IMHO the only constant across countries, generations, geopolitical situations is the cost of a beer. You can compare Phoenician era beer to 10th century china to London during WWx or North America in the 70s or today. The cost of a beer vs average wage will tell you how the society is doing.

You might want to look at the Dynamax Isata 5 series. The 30FW plan is the closest but we are looking at the 28SS as our kids are grown.
