I am new to this forum and think it is really the coolest thing I've seen in a long time. I live in Minneapolis MN, I am not a off road enthusiast (definately think what everybody on here is doing is very neat though) Anyways I spend a lot of time fishing and am a busy chef with short weekends so a truck camper is a matter of efficiency and necessity for me.
Currently my wife and I both tent camp and sleep in bed of truck with topper and storage setup. I am familiar with most of the manufactures on this website and currently like the FWC campers shell models.
In order of importance I am looking for something lightweight, easy and efficicient, and lastly affordable.
So I guess that should cover the bases on my uses and bio, My 1st question is my truck and what would need to be done to handle a popup or lightweight hard top camper. I currently own a 02 tundra off road package, everything is stock. Acces cab with 4.7 V-8.
I also need to be able to tow my boat which is 16 ft./ 50 hp 4 stroke motor/ total package probably 1500#.
What needs to be done and can be done to my suspension to handle the extra weight of the camper, and is that all that needs to done or would it require modifications in the egine/tran etc.
question 2 is ho low of a temp does a pop truck camper with heat accomodate, I've slept comfortable in my current shell set up down to 5 w/out heat, so should a pop up with cold weather package be o.k to below zero, because winter use would be great, conisdering we normally have a lot of it in this part of the country.
Thanks to all that are willing to chime in on this for me, please remember I no nothing about truck suspensions and those parts so brand names i can look up would help a lot, I am willing to research prices and info on my own but ballpark $ can't hurt. At this point I am trying to figure how much money I would need to save to do all of this. Someday i would really like a four wheel drive van (like sportmobiles) just a dyi version.
We lived in boulder, CO for a year and the first time i saw a sportmabile I was amazed, perfect for my needs back in midwest, anyways thats a whole different thread.
Once again thanks for the inpiration I have found by looking through everybody's great work on this web site and thanks for any advice you can provide.
