05+ Tacoma GPS mount idea

As most of you know - I just got my 05 Tacoma this week and have already been working on making it mine. Here is my solution for my Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx. The idea stems from two needs - good signal reception and an easy place to see it without blocking the view outward.

The Garmin mounts have the benefit of being removable, so there is no advertising "something expensive goes here" with an ultra visible mount.

I simply used Silicon smeared all over the back of the mount and left it for a day to dry. This is almost like magic - it will hold only until I want it gone - then it just peels away with no screw holes etc. I wrapped the power cable around the handle leaving enough slack so I can open the door fully. Then I fished it under the INSIDE moulding that runs along the dash. Then it went under the dash using a couple of wire ties along the way - then up through the steering wheel surround coming out by the storage cubby by the ignition.

Hopefully the pics tell the story better than these ill-arranged words.

Hey, if it works, it works. Having said that, I'll again put in a pitch for just about anything from Round-a-mount. I've used RAM mounts for 10 years now and they're fantastic. The best thing about them is that they make mounts for everything, meaning if you switch to a different GPS you just buy a new "cradle" for about $15 and you can mount your new GPS in the same way you mounted your old one. Also, they make an incredible number of mounting systems. Since my GPS has to function in the truck, on the motorycle (Triumph Thunderbird), and mountain bike, I needed a more or less "universal" mount, and the RAM has that.

There are a bunch of places that sell RAM mounts, Cabelas and Cycoactive (for motorcycle-specific applications) being my favorites.

I use a suction-cup windshield mount, which seems to work fine so far. Nice thing about RAM mounts is that if the suction cup proves to be not rugged enough, I can easily switch to a screw-in or glue-on mount for probably less than $10.
