05 Tacoma questions

Hi all,

I am currently looking at an '05 Tacoma and would like to tap your {all of you} vast knowledge for any shortcomings this year may have. I've had several Toyota's my first was a 1985 –still running with over 200k that's when the speedo just gave up! So I don't see any real problems but each model/year has its bugs. I'm told the 05 has a week rear axle, my driving style is slow and easy with more trails, washes and beaches but on occasion I do find myself on more difficult trails or come up on a unexpected obstacle.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I missed the 05 by 45minutes! So I've opened my search to any year Tacoma {or even a early Tundra}. Again any problems or issues that ya'll know of please give me a ‘heads up'.
Also though
I live in AZ I don't mind traveling for a good truck so if you know of one feel free to pass any leads along to me! I can make it worth your time, at least $10.50 in cash!
Thanks, Mark

Thanks, Mark

The drive train is identical except for the differential. The sport has a limited slip, the off road version has the e-locker.

The early '05 off road models with the e-locker were the ones with ring and pinion issues (mine was one of them). Since you are looking at a sport model the rear end should be fine, I've heard of no issues with them.

Thanks Tacodoc! I'll continue to shop around if this deal falls through.

Thanks again and stay safe!

I know its a point of contention, but if you are truly looking for an off-road vehicle that can handle the adversity that unmaintained roads might throw at you, get a truck with a rear locker (TRD Off Road). The mechanical LSD is a useful upgrade over stock, open diffs, but the locker will give you the best performance in a bad situation, and give you an ace in the hole should you ever need it. My 2 cents....
