05+ Toyota Tacoma Re-gear Information...

Hi all,

I have a 2007 2.7 regular cab without an EL or LSD. With a combination of lift, armor, and 255/85/16 BFG MT's my gas mileage and power is at a loss. I could use a better ratio than my stock 4.10's.

Yet, this is an area I have no experience or no-how.

From the scattered sources I have been able to find, I believe 4.88s are my best bet, but I would like to become more educated about this...

Any helpful links I could be directed to?

Some 2.7 owners have any input?

All information is greatly appreciated..

Thanks!

Not really here
You might get more responses if you post this up in the Toyota section. I am sure roving is on to something though. :)

I figured posting in here due to re-gearing being a universal modification for all vehicles...

I'm familiar with the ratio's n such, yet I'm not up to speed on the parts needed, methods of installation, time needed for the install and manufacturers of the products (for both the front and rear diffs as I have a 4x4). Sorry for being so nieve on the subject, but I'd rather be honest than make a fool of myself when I start calling my local garages.

Thanks.

4.88's are pretty good for 33" tires up to 35". 5.29's for everything above 35"

Agreed. 255's are what, about 33.4," and with the MT you'll be happy to see a return of the power you once had. I was ecstatic when I swapped to 5.29s (AT). And you're good here or the Toyota section.

Good luck!

I'm running Nitro 4:88 gears in my 06 reg cab 2.7 5 spd w/ 255/85r16 tires. I think this is the best bang for your buck combination so to speak.

With 33.4" tires you would still be below stock gearing with 4.56. If you want even more low end 4.88's would be your best bet. I think that those are the only aftermarket gearsets for the 2nd gen tacomas. If you want easy instal you can do a 3rd member/clamshell swap with some of the gear suppliers so there is little to no downtime. I think that the 4.88's would be pretty low if you like going quick on the freeway, but there are gear calculators to help with that decision.
