06 4m50 chugging and smoke

Hey guys

06 fe180 4.9, between idle and say 2000rpm driving and free revving the engine chugs, and smokes...a lot, say like a grey color some maybe. It will build zero boost till it clears.

Seems to be getting a little worse, injectors cleaned and tested about 10000k ago, all filters done, valve set done.

Any ideas?

Sounds like it has a dirty filter restricting fuel flow or air is being sucked in through a loose connection. Else check the manual fuel priming pump is screwed tight.

Would you say it is grey-white or grey-black?

White = not enough fuel (or fuel injection timing is off)

Black = too much fuel/not enough air

It's not black, white grey color.

I will try another fuel filter, maybe I got some thing bad in my tank.

Other wise I am not sure, must be lean, but can lean make a lot of smoke¿

Anther thing I noticed is the problem gets worse the hotter the engine gets, after a good drive it's much worse then half warm

Makes me think it is some sort of a fuel contamination issue if it gets worse as the tank gets stirred up from driving? I would check to see if there is a low fuel pressure code stored in the computer. In my experience low fuel pressure does not illuminate the check engine light but does throw a code.

Ok I'll check the computer, I assumed for sure if it was low pressure it would set a light.

I do totally agree about the fuel, I pulled the fuel filter again and the bottom of the housing was lots of stuff and it was maybe 3000km old.

There was little rust chunks flakes and some sort of fine silver dust that was not magnetic, maybe aluminum?


New filter, chugging still there after driving but wow more power

Ok I'll check the computer, I assumed for sure if it was low pressure it would set a light.

Yeah it always strikes me as silly how something that actually could impact performance won't turn the light on... but if the EGR doesn't read right then you are in limp mode.

Hey got some codes, they are past codes. I am not near my service manual, any one care to help decode these?

They are flash codes from pulling the diag fuse...

my very limited experience with blink codes on Canter (one episode) was that the old codes could have occurred at any time in the past and may not be relevant to current problem. In my case low boost pressure but past codes suggested engine was running backwards among others.

When I cleared the old codes and engine light still came on the new codes were very clearly associated with poor engine operation.

yeah I've had the same experience... clear all the codes and then see what you get.

Ok thanks guys, I deleted them, I'll see what happens, I will be away from the truck for a few weeks.



I have had so many injector problems especially with number 4
