100 Series master cylinder..yikes!

I think on the 100 the booster is electric and built in as part of the MC. A totally dumb, needlessly complex, and expensive system.

A normal hydraulic MC costs $150 or so and so if you are used to that, the prices of this unit might seem crazy.

Still, it's your brakes, so pay up or drive something different. Unfortunately, it is that simple.

This post and your quote is exactly why I own old trucks!!!

Two grand for a M/C, make me laugh! And since it is all computer controlled you can't just toss in an 80-series or something, I am sure.

I will never buy anything newer then an 80-series for this very reason. Sheesh I still can't believe it. And I thought the $140 thermostat in my 1st Gen Taco was ugly.

An electrically powered M/C, um isn't that kind of un-safe? Might as well be some super old school single circuit unit. I am sure there is some sort of safety system in place in case you blow a fuse or whatever but still.

Just saying

Bump, any updates from the OP or any other 100 Series owners on brake system failures? I just picked up a '00 100 Series that is lacking nearly all braking, full foot pressure and the low range will push right past it at anything but idle. ABS & VSC lights are on. I've had literally 5 minutes to look at it today, going to start tinkering with it as I get time.

A couple of things: You can replace the master cylinder plunger...fortunately that was all that was wrong with mine...I replaced mine last summer for less than $100 parts. I, for the first time since owning my '99, took it to the local dealer after I installed the plunger (and the Stoptech BBK), Reno Toyota, to have them do the final bleed out as the ABS circuit pretty much requires the special SST to do this properly.

Its an electronic brake boost, rather than vacuum. Not all that uncommon and a pretty rare failure mode. Even if it does fail your still left with un-assisted brakes. Given the rare number of failures I've seen/heard of (only Utah 100 I've heard of or dealt with that had the failure) its likely a non issue for most. It seems in this case the master cylinder was leaking, possibly simply form being over-filled or out of the master itself. The leak was left long enough to damage the electric pump and or the ABS computer?

I would start with replacing the piston, cheap part and pretty easy install:

Thanks for the link, I hadn't found that one on Mud. Sadly I think the master leak persisted for quite a while and in turn damaged the pump or computer. Still worth a shot though.

Good to know and great advice. I do a lot of business back and forth with several of our local Toyota dealers, I'll have to check with them to see if they have the SST and more so are familiar with its use. Thanks!

No doubt, you can get a 60 for the price of the M/C!! LOL!

You can't safely tow a 100 with the 60, you can tow the 60 with the 100 ;) This Cruiser may have to tow our desert race car on a car hauler back from La Paz for example.

I'm the last guy you need to convince on the merits of solid old school builds and technology. I've owned a half dozen 60/62's, a dozen 40/55's, an 80 and still have two '72 40's and a '66 45 in various states of repair/disrepair, needless to say I love old rigs. Fwiw, I have 60 Series customers that have spent similar money on things like steering boxes (OEM is/was nearly $1800 and they insisted it be OEM) and or brand new Toyota carb's ($800+), etc. While they were fully aware aftermarket, used and rebuilt options existed, some of these owners drove the Cruiser off the lot and don't hesitate to spend the money to keep it going for another 200k miles. The same situation with the 100 for me, I could source a used master assembly for $400-600 but when I plan to build this as a long term owner, I won't hesitate to put a couple grand into a $12k+ vehicle if it means keeping it reliable and safe.

Think of it proportionally, a $2k part on a $10k UZJ100 is like a $500 part on a $2500 FJ60 and yet people put $500 parts on 60's all the time :D

OT: Kurt, I can't wait to see your 100 build!

I'm excited to start the build. Step one will be getting the brakes fixed, its got zero park brake resulting from seized bell cranks. Parts are here waiting for me to install. Plans at this point are to unload my shelves on it one day, ARB F&R bumpers, air lockers, possibly regear?, rack and a tent, OME torsions and coils with either Nitro Sport struts or Radflo's. Sliders of some variant and a snorkel for volcano action :D

Its honestly going to be a ways off, not only do I need to address the brakes but its getting to be our super busy season and we have customer bumper, slider, suspension, snorkel, locker, etc projects going on in the shop nearly ever day for the next few weeks with no signs of slowing  If I get it done for Cruise Moab in May I'll be a happy camper :D

Dream it build it
Can you say old school master cylinder and booster...I would revamp the brake system for that price and be happy not to have ABS....

That is crazy...for $2000 I would expect it to auto stop for me to save me putting my foot on the brake...

You could rebuild the whole system with bigger brakes for that amount of money...

Anxiously awaiting your suggested parts list ;)

Fwiw I'd like to keep the ABS, VSC and A-Trac all working as designed by Toyota, so while it might sound like a 'master cylinder' its also the ABS modulator and brake pressure pump (brake booster equivalent).
