100 series tire size

I am getting ready to get new off road tires for my 100 series land cruiser.

I am getting the tires before the lift, so I would like to know what is the largest size tire that will fit the 100 series LC with stock suspension.

NOTE: I am building an offroad expedition rig, capable of highway travel and decent rock crawling.

The choices I am looking at are:

285/75/16 (may seem small after a lift, may be small for the heavy loads I will carry. These look good to me on a 4runner...but for a LC????)

305/70/16 (just a bit wider, should handle more load better)

315/75/16 (now were talking offroading! but will it fit with stock suspension)

What have you guys with a similar use for your LC running?

I am a big fan of BFG AT's if your wondering the tire I am thinking of.

Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

285/75/16. Perfect all around tire. I am running the BFG AT's in that size (E rated) right now. Can't say I love them, but they were free.

Yep, 285's. The 315's will not fit stock and really do not fit a lifted cruiser without wheel spacers. There is a good thread on Mud about 315's and issues.

285's are cheaper and readily available. I run them on my lifted 100.

This is my 100 with 285/75 R16 Toyo MTR's with and OME medium springs. No problems with clearance or rubbing even when the suspension is at full compression.

IMHO if you go much bigger you open a can of worms.

WOW all votes for 285s. I was thinking g the 305/70s would be good because the are the same diameter as the 285, but wider. On my runner I removed my wheel flares so I could lean out the window and see my tire...to place it on rocks where I want. The LC design makes that hard. I thought wider tires might make them easier to see and carry the load of my family and gear better.

What am I not considering?

Thanks for the responses.

I run 285/75/16 KM2's Load Range E on my H3.

Load range E seems to ride a little ruff and I would prefer a D rated tire.

I love the 315 BFG AT's on our 100 series, everything else looks to small. I recently have trimmed the plastic inner fender behind the front tires where they rubbed, but for a couple years I just left it untouched and it rubbed the plastic on turns when the suspension heavily cycled. It wasn't a big deal.

I have 295/75/16 and after they wear out I'm going to 285's or 255/85, reason is I believe they will give me some power back.

If I understand correctly the sidewall construction determines the weight capacity of the tire more than the width.

The down side of wider tires are, reduced turning radius due to interference, and less "Bite" in low traction conditions like mud and snow.

On lighter trucks wider tires are sometimes used for sand, deep mud and snow allowing them to "float". The 100 LC is so heavy I doubt you could fit anything big enough to act as a flotation tire.

A 285/75R16, even a load range D instead of E, should give you plenty of carrying capacity. Off the top of my head I think a 285/75 load range D offers 3,300-lb per tire at 65-PSI. They are plenty for most "1-ton" trucks, surely enough for a Land Cruiser.
