'11 Suzuki SX4 AWD

Had my first failure of any kind on the SX4 this week. "Failure" may be the wrong word, as it's just a worn out part. My right rear wheel bearing is screaming like a banshee. Took it in hoping to be covered under warranty and they basically black listed my car for any suspension/driveline work due to my lift kit. Figured that going in but I thought I would give it a shot. What sucks is that you have to purchase the entire hub assembly. $300 later I have a new hub assembly on the way to my door instead of paying $760 plus tax. Yeah you read that right, $760 for a new wheel bearing installed from my dealership. I'll gladly pocket the $460 and install it myself. I'm going to assume the left rear is probably on it's way out sometime soon as well but I'll deal with that when it comes up.

I'm obviously on the "extreme use" scale for this car so if these wheel bearings last another 80,000km I'm okay with that. The rear wheel bearings are known to be the first thing that goes on these cars and I knew that going in.

Just found this thread- and I looked at one of these a few years ago. Seemed like a good little vehicle, but still needed a truck back then. Now looking for a run about with decent economy, and found a pair of new '10 models, 6 speeds, but only 2wd;-( However, for me here in NC, no biggie. Question is this- will the lifts/skids/etc fit the 2wd models?? If so, I am seriously considering grabbing one of these, little lift, some A/T's, and have some fun!!

Thoughts??

I would hold out for an AWD. There's almost zero price difference in the used market and you just get so much more car for the money. Holding out for a 6spd AWD is worth it!

Sorry I forgot to answer this. Yes the lift will fit on the 2wd models, it's the exact same suspension, there are just holes where the drivetrain should be. There are a couple people running the lift kit and front skid on their 2wd.

The rear skid won't work obviously because there's no rear diff.

I can't stop driving it

:coffeedrink:

I switched to synthetic in the engine and rear diff. I'm not sure if my mileage increase is due to that or the warmer weather or both.....but my car is telling me it's averaging 31 mpg over 6k miles of driving.:wings: I honestly haven't ridden my bike much as this is just sooo convenient to hop in and go.

I have ordered a synthetic GL4 for the manual transmission. Apparently a GL5 that has all the specs of a GL4 has something extra in it which can cause "plating" on the brass components, resulting in poor shifting.

I'm going to be looking into adding a tow bar to be able to tug it along with my new to me but old ambulance. I am also trying to squeeze every last mile out of the stock rubber, hoping to purchase some Studless ice tires a little closer to Labor Day. I'm thinking a 215/60r16 as I don't plan on a lift for it.

Finally got mine out off for some off-pavement fun. I wanted this vehicle to be able to take me off the beaten path for some fun, and it looks like it will do just fine.

The Primitive Racing skid plates probably paid for themselves already; I did a short climb on loose softball sized rocks and tagged the rear several times, and the front once. I did not hit anything else underneath. I also did not stop and take action pics on this section, as someone apparently had holed their oil pan there and made a bit of a mess.

This is about as rough as I'd want to try, although I have no qualms about doing some off-camber stuff to get around larger rocks or dried ruts.

Bunch of oil-pan hatin' rocks:

I packed for a multi-day trip (not pictured) to see how the vehicle handled with a full load. The car handles just fine on and off road, no complaints. The rear diff was a bit lower than I had expected, but no more so than anything up front.

I did some very minor trimming on the factory jack bracket and the plastic paneling that the false floor rests on, and removed the false floor. (I can still put it back in) A 215/65 R16 on a factory alloy wheel will just barely fit in there without trimming; with trimming, it goes in and out easier. (It will of course be much taller than the factory donut spare, hence the removal of the lower trunk floor) I did not want to use up roof rack space on a spare, and don't plan on commuting to work with a rack on anyways. Some tool bags/rolls, a gas can, and a couple of hard cases with stuff like OBD scanners also live down in there.

Above that I have the factory flip-up cargo shelf and a pair of 8 gallon Action Packers. The totes contain a 12v compressor, tire repair, folding shovel, minor repair supplies, the sort of basic stuff I always have in the vehicle.

For longer trips I'm tossing in a third tote in the back seat with fluids/spares/recovery gear, as well as a cooler and a water can.

The underside of both front seats have humps that prevent stuff stored under them from shifting forward. I like this. I have some hard cases under there with medical stuff, GPS, etc.

Planned mods:

- I plan to replace the factory lifting trunk cargo cover with a fixed cargo shelf made from aluminum and HDPE sheet, with some tie down points on it. It should work for securing small bags, clothing, lunch coolers, etc., without blocking the view out the back. This will also help make use of some wasted space near the rear corner windows.

- I want to add some low profile Kydex pockets to the passenger side of the center console for storing odds and ends. The center console is actually not in the center of the car, it's more towards the driver's side. The side pockets in the doors are very handy, but also spoken for already.

- Run something to the trunk that I can run the air compressor off of, so I don't need to pop the hood to air up.

- Roof rack. I'm aiming to use some Frontrunner load bars to toss something together to carry some Maxtrax, and occasionally a 10L military fuel can/Rotopax/8 gallon Action Packer or two.

Overall shot. This is loaded with my regular stuff in; ride height is a bit higher in the back when empty, but not notably lower when full. This seems to be a very easy vehicle to clean; the driveway pics are after hitting up a manual car wash on the way home. I did hit up some mud holes today.

A note on the tires:

I've had a hint of rubbing on the front 2-3 times during parking lot maneuvers. I have not been able to find what I'm hitting, nor are there any marks I can see on the tires or on the plastic wheel well liners. I did not have any rubbing offroad.

I'll be heading to Colorado in mine in a couple of days. No off-roading - pure highway trip! I installed the Rostra cruise control kit yesterday - amazingly easy, although it is a tight fit working up under the dash. It certainly is a fun little car to drive.

Just buy a simple 12v socket. If you look in the right rear you'll see a hole that you can simply pop out slide in the 12v socket. All the wires are already there for the 12v socket. Couldn't be easier! No idea why they just couldn't include the 12v socket from the factory.

I have the same thing ONLY when I'm at full lock turning right coming from the driver's side wheel. Not sure what it's rubbing on either, but it's not making any marks so I always remember to just not go full lock.

I just got back from another extended camping trip up north with mine. Performed flawlessly once again. I always have to remind myself that this little thing is a sub $25k car because you just simply forget it sometimes. I stopped off to explore some fire routes along the way. The car definitely feels top-heavy with the RTT on it in off camber situations and the car is just useless in anything technical with the trailer on. If it just had a lower 1st gear, or better yet, low-range, it would just be the greatest little car ever. But it did the fire routes with no issues at all. With the trailer, you really need AWD even on fire roads.

So far I've replaced both rear hubs because of wheel bearing failures but besides that I've had to do nothing. My front and rear skids are dented and scratched and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I've even added a boat to my camping supplies. I think other than the RTT, this is one of the best investments i've made in camping stuff. These new inflatable boats are genius. The stability and portability of them is just second to none!

I don't think any other sub $25k car could get me the places I've been and be able to go on all these adventures. I averaged 10.2L/100km with the RTT and trailer with a boat in it, two deep cycle batteries, trolling motor, two coolers, all my brother's camping equipment, fishing equipment, my brother and my dog. That's driving at 105km/h on the highway and including all the fire route driving along the way. Just incredible!

I knew about the 12V spot in the rear, I just wasn't sure if it would handle the draw from the compressor. It's one of those little MV-50's, disassembled, tweaked, and re-lubed with better quality grease.

I miss low range as well, but the CVT seems to get it done when needed.
