110 200Tdi chatter, any ideas?

I've a chattering issue with my 110 200tdi, doesn't seem to be the engine. but I can't find a pattern to it. sometimes it's chatter free for a couple of days then it'll start up again. If it's going to, it will usually start about 3 miles into driving, going straight. Chatters while coasting though not as badly. Seems most prevalent in 4th gear at around 30-35 mph, but 5th can be similar. Doesn't do it below 30 mph. If I drive more than an hour it can disappear again. I've linked a vid with the sound, audible at 2:42 (in neutral), 3:33 (clutch depressed) and 4:50 (it's pretty constant, just can't hear it over engine noise in the recording) Any ideas?

Thanks
Gene

Gene are you honking @ moose or waiving @ folks ?

Really hard to say- I hear something. A guess assuming you have already checked all 4 u joints, would be on the front of the transfer case sheild for the seal. I have had these come loose and spin and make a similar noise. If you look behind the front drive shaft yke there is a steel plat that recesses into the aluminum and is designed to protect that front seal from sticks rocks etc. It's not supposed to spin but when it does it makes a noise similar to yours and a can scream at higher speeds.

Doug,
I think that's it. Sounds like the kind of noise that would make. Do they typically just press in? This has been driving me nuts for a while, wouldn't have found it as it sits nice and tight so as not to look suspicious, but it's loose. Thanks Doug, very grateful.

The beeping was to indicate for myself when i was going up hill or coasting with clutch in, didn't know how that recording was going to turn out.

Gene,
I just removed it because I had it apart and was about to pull the seal and replace the bearing when I realized ****** was going on. If you weren't going to drive the truck for a day or two a good adhesive like a a couple of small dabs of 3m5200 would hold it still.

OK, I'm confused... The mud shield that is shown should be attached (pressed on) to the drive flange and should spin....

I'll clean it off and give the 5200 a whirl, I've a tube open too. Thanks again.
