'13 Tacoma vs. '13 Rubicon

It's starting to look like I will be using a trailer for certain. Shopped around a bit and found a nice '94 lc that I could get all the accessories on quickly and save money by buying used. Still love the jeep and I know it'll take me a lot more places after my research is over. Should hopefully be pick something up at the beginning of next month. Waiting to get my money back from the LR deal. Keep you all updated and thanks for the comments!

As an owner of both a 12' JKUR and an '09 Power Wagon, I'd recommend a full sized truck for your needs, specifically a Power Wagon. Lots more room, and seriously, it's just as capable as the JK. I suspect with a loaded trailer behind the JKUR, the fuel economy wouldn't be much different. At 8000 lbs I've been getting 12 to 13 MPG as a daily driver, we're getting 16 to 18 in the Jeep with a mildly modified rig - 2.5" AEV lift, 33" tires, light weight bumpers, and a winch with synthetic line. If you want to tow a trailer, the Power Wagon is up to that without adding stress and strain to things. We pull a 3500 to 4000 lb StarCraft RT-10, and the truck doesn't even know it's there. When aired down the MPG does get stupid - single digits is normal with tires below 20 PSI.

So why do we own the Jeep? We bought the Jeep to do day trips more economically than the truck, and allow us to go the same places we do/did in the truck at roughly 100% better mileage. The Jeep still gets 15 to 16 when the truck gets 8...

We also had an '05 Taco DC. Nice truck, we enjoyed it, but it struggled with the camper. The 245 HP ('05 Tacoma) vs 285 ('12 Jeep), vs 400+ HP (modified Hemi in the '09 PW) makes it an easy choice for a load. Heck the Jeep has way more power than the Taco did with the same gear ratios in both, and gets better mileage.

Your list is way incomplete. Dont forget how quick the wieght if spare fuel, recovery gear, tools and oh yea potable water and food! If it is only those 2 vehicles the taco is your best pic. However I would say that a trailer is your best route. I Would get a base 4x4 tacoma add an ome lift with extra rear spring, an arb locker and compressor then focus everything I had on a basic camping trailer like a Campa Cub.
