1500 to spend

I think the H3 came with a rear locker from the factory. At least most of them I think.

Adventure packages came with the locker, OP said base/lux, so no locker :( Aftermarket locker w/install would eat up a good portion of the budget. You can also do front lockers by swapping in newer front diff, but those are usually lower on the list of upgrades (mostly after you've grenaded your front dif :))

I'd add a Detroit locker in the rear, hilift jack, highlift tire grabbers, fab a hook/chain so your hilift can grab your recovery rings, shovel, 3/8" chains, tire chains.

A pair of stout bumpers with good recovery points look to be in your future.

This.

If you don't wheel alone, a couple of straps will usually get you out.
Although, I would need a good winch if I had one of those weird Hummer ladder looking skids. They just look like rock-hang-up magnets.

Start with the basics and add the big ticket stuff later:
First Aid kit!
Hi lift jack and it's usual accessories
Good quality air compressor
Tire puncture repair kit
Recovery strap
Several flashlights
Off road lights (front and rear)
Tool kit and good gloves to use them!
Emergency food, water and shelter (just in case!)
GPS unit, compass and paper maps!

You can get all of this and still have some cash left over to go do some off roading!

I second this man. It's easy to get distracted buying toys and loose sight of the object of the exercise - get miles on the truck, wind in your hair and sunburn.

That's what an expo outfit is all about. It's not about proving you have a fancy tricked out mobile workshop that can turn into a stompy war robot#, it's about going places and doing stuff.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Spend the money on beer, diesel and memories.

# = Footnote 1. Not that that would be a _bad_ thing. Huge stompy robots are cool.
