1600 Eezi-Awn for the Family? Honestly.

Do you feel that the 1600 would be too small for 2 adults and 2 children? I'd love an Eezi-Awn RTT, but I just don't see it being large enough?

I do think you could squeez in. While I also agree with Durango60, I feel that upon purchase of the tent, you may need to purchase a Rover to go under it. Don't forget the cheesecake! Honestly.

Actually, I have no idea. tape out the 1600 measurements in your living room (move toys out of the way first of course) and lay the whole famdamly in der. :jump:

A 1.6m tent is going to be 63" wide - good for two adults and one child, or two adults and two really small children. Beware! Children grow up fast.

I would go with a 1.8m tent - 71" wide. I have a lot of customers using this size tent for family camping. Works out very well.

Mike S, that's why I'm also considering your OC/3... Just a matter of how the heck am I gonna fit that thing on the top and I prefer the fore-to-aft not beam-wise opening of the tents...

The rear opening tents are nice, but have a couple of disadvantages...

1. They can only be as wide as your vehicle. The average off road tyoe vehicle is probably about 55" wide, so that means a farily small tent - good for two people, but impossible for a family trip.

2. They can complicate access to the rear of the vehicle.

A side opening tent, allowing occupants to sleep perpendicular to the center line of the vehile, can offer more width = more room for occupants, and can be set up to open to either the Passenger or driver's side.

So the bigger tents are going to be side openers.

Actually, I would have it open over the hood. After some research and considering I make OME 864s sag like a cheap domestic lift with the junk we carry, I think creating a moment rolling towards the front of the vehicle vs the rear would be preferable.

Doesn't matter though really as the larger tents I'll have to mount transversely. My problem with the larger tents and the transverse opening is that it'll take up the whole roof basically, and I'd like to get some fuel up there (go through a lot of that) as well as that's where I mount my 2nd spare (not used that often thankfully). Why does it always have to be a tradeoff?

Thought about that, but it comes down to price for two. Plus, two would take up even more room on top than like a large tent.

I am uncertain of the exact dimensions of the Ezi-Awn when folded, but the Overland is just 43-1/2" wide when folded. If you're using 58" load bars, you have about 14" on the hinge side of the tent. You could fab a long narrow basket and use this for all kinds of stuff - Gas cans, pannier boxes, tool boxes, tents... even a spare, I suppose. Or fit the tent so that it allows an overhanging front basket for the spare and a couple of gas cans. That would put the heavier load to the front.

Where I'd mount it is on my current `rack' and that is about 51-52" wide, but still leaves me like 8" I guess. Mike, on the OLC3, where are the tent openings?

I have the 1600 and I really don't think you'd want two kids and two adults in there. It'd be very tight and uncomfortable in there. You could get away with it for a while if your kids are young and small but like Mike S. said, they grow fast. My wife, 19 mo. old son and I sleep in there comfortably, three adults are fine as well but on the virge of tight.

I have another baby on the way so this tent will fit us all for a while then I'll need to start packing along another tent or something...
