1966 NADA 109 Dormobile 2.5L in Pristine Shape

This NADA 109 Dormobile began life on February 23, 1966 and was finished on March 1, 1966. Her Vehicle Serial # is 26407614 (VIN over here) with a Label No. Of 1062. She was modified by Martin Walter to a Four Berth Dormobile (LR626) with cooker, wardrobe, Dormatic seating (converts into one double or two single beds, also 60% of the front seat flips over to make a dinette with the back seat) and lifting roof (provides full adult height walking head room) with two fold out sleeping cots, and special order second row heater. She was originally delivered HDO (Home Delivery Option) to the Perkins family.
Since then her owners have included: the Stockton Boy Scouts; Todd Borgie and Nick Baggarly of the Drive Around the World Team (who rebuilt her to the pristine shape she is in now); one of the DATW Board of Directors; and myself, all of us in California.

Overall, this is one of the cleanest, best running and rust free Dormobiles you are going to find. She has undergone a recent re-build by Todd and Nick of the DATW team ( http://www.aroundtheworld1999.com/rovers.htm ) to very high standards.

Nick Baggarly and Todd Borgie were the guys that rebuilt the truck from the ground up. Todd has completed three trips around the world, twice in LRs, Nick is the Director of DATW (Drive Around the World) and is working on his fourth expedition in the south pole. Todd did most of the work, and heavily sound proofed the truck from the ground up. Even has a rubber insulated cover for the seat bulkhead and floors and center tunnel(ExMoor Insulation Kit)plus a rubber membrane insulation on all of the door panels.

I bought the Dormobile from, Tom Clare, who is on the Board of Directors for DATW. On the last expedition the team was in Siberia and needed funds to export the trucks to Alaska, so he took the ‘66 Dormobile in as collateral on a loan to keep the team moving. He sold it to me to focus on other projects.

The DATW rebuild included in part, a new engine, rebuilt transmission, new steering tie rods and ends, swivel balls and CV joints all rebuilt, new gas tank with new sending unit, updated suspension, new firewall/bulkhead, new check straps, painted frame, etc. New electrical panel w/new plug fuses plus wiring. Fairey overdrive and lockout hubs are in great shape. New ARB Locker rear end. New nuts and bolts throughout the truck, defender door hinges, all new weather stripping on doors, new window channels on all six sliding windows (the rear two sliding windows are a nice option as most 109 rear windows don't slide open), new weather seal on Dormobile top (which is newly gel coated), new rubber seals on Dormobile top windows and the original Dormobile top hatch to allow venting while camping. A brand new Dormobile red/white stripe canopy/tent in delivery bag (brand new...and very hard to find!) is included. The Wardrobe was taken by Nick for another Dormobile and the cooker/sink unit needs installing. The entire Dormobile top inside (tent rails, bunk rails, etc.) has been painted white, very clean up there. New Bronze Green paint job inside and out and rust preventing paint on the frame.

This is a wonderful Dormobile that is ready for daily-driver duties and camping this season since the re-build has already been done. You're probably right, but go she must! I think my son will regret it more than I do though, just as I regret my parents selling their MGA after only owning it for two years! Hopefully replacing the 109 with a 110 Dormobile will allow him to forgive me! :smiley_drive:

Oops!

Hi Jon,

Yes, I'm in Stockton and so is the Dormy. Sorry, I seem to have included everything in the ad but the price. I'm asking $15,000. She also comes with several boxes of extra parts. I didn't list all the extras, but I have a full set of steps for the doors which need a little cleaning, military bumperettes, original land rover mud flaps, original glavanized steel safety cages for the back lights, a hand actuated wiper-fluid system, the original red/white camping light, etc. She is a great rig, but my family (read: wife) wants something more modern for our little ones (6 months and 2.5 years) and we're moving up to the Seattle area and will not have a garage to keep her in. She deserves better than almost daily rain and the rust that would go with it. Oh yeah, she's registered until April of 2008 in California, so all you Cali folks get a free year of registration on me!:sunny:

Carey, that is the first time I have seen a pic of her. She's a beauty! You seem to be going the opposite direction of me! We have 4 kids - ages 12, 7, 5, and 1 week! I told her I wanted to by a 109 (and throw in an aftermarket AC) to use as the family car... she hesitated before she said no. She had never hesitated before... I'm breaking her down!:victory:

She'd still have her Benz as her daily driver but we can't fit 2 adults and 4 kids in there. I guess the fact that she'd rather burn in h*ll than drive a mini-van is working in my favor...

man......if it were a diesel, I'd say bring it to Seattle with you and I'd take it.

Hi Graham,

The Dormobile top works perfectly, but the original tent/awning was MIA. A new tent/awning was ordered from Dormobile and is still in the delivery package, awaiting installation. I didn't get a chance to install since before the wife and I agreed she would go (the Landy, not the wife!). As for the cooker, I thought I had pictures of it on the web-album. I'll have to add some that show it is in great shape. The original pink sink even comes with the original stopper still attached by the chain.

It wasn't my intention to hunt down the wardrobe, as I'm not looking for 100% authenticity. She already has been updated with newer brake system and electrics, so I thought I would go with an Engel fridge/freezer in place of the wardrobe and install a below the window stainless steel cabinet to match the cooker and hold water and other food stuffs. The wardrobe goes from the floor to the ceiling and blocks the window. I wanted things to stay light and airy and the wardrobe just closes up the back too much in my opinion.

I did find and buy some original 1966 Dormobile cot fabric to install on the "upstairs" cots, but it's still in England, waiting to be mailed over here. I also found an original Dormobile roof rack and made a deal to buy it, but the seller can't find the attachment hardware and wants to wait to send it all to me at once. I haven't stopped trying to outfit her because you never know if your wife will change her mind and I'll get to keep her!

Dormobile....

Damn, I wasn't going to start seriously looking for another 6 months..... I always wanted one of these. With a growing family my Series III SWB is getting small.

Are there any rust issues on the frame or bulkhead? Any serious leaks?

Please update this post if your Dormobile sells... Time to break open my Looonie (Canadian $1 coin) bottle and start counting.....
