Hello Kerry...

Yes... We did have some discussion about using Pressure Treated Wood, but had a concern about the level of moisture in PT. We just got the repairs completed and will seal before buttoning it all back up.

I guess in the end it was my final decision not to go with Pressure Treated, I felt that the work we have done is stronger than OEM and has a great chance of going another 40 years. I also think that the Closed Cell Foam Insulation will help preserve/protect when applied.

Anyone have any great suggestions what to seal/treat the wood with? I heard a vote for epoxy....

Anyone want to place bid on a 80 year old camper? I think it'll make it! :)

CPES. Wish I had an old Alaskan to try it on. Unfortunatley, I do have an old wood camper I'll be using it on, but not an Alaskan. If I ever get around to building a new camper, I'll use CPES and some of their other products on the new construction to make it last a long time.

The UPS Man has brought me LED Interior Lights, Fan-Tastic Vent 4000R & a Solar Vent from ICP Solar Technologies.... Thanks Carlyle for the tip on your Alaskan Camper Build.

Solar Vent Installation

This morning I had opportunity to rough in the ICP Solar Technology Solar Vent into the roof over the sleeping area. It's basically a 4.5" Rough Opening and the boxed with 2 x 2" for strength.

Check out Carlyle's awesome Alaskan Camper build for more details on the Solar Vents: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9502&highlight=alaskan+camper&page=6

Buddy Eric... Cutting the rough opening:

Finished & ready for 12 Volt wiring & Spray-in Closed Cell Insulation afterward. Note: The existing upper square opening is the Fan-Tastic Fan

Great job. I didn't expect such major surgery. You've dissected the patient.

Removing the buried condom wrappers should cut the weight by 20 pounds. :)

Unless the woods ornamental, like a column, its cheaper to replace the wood with treated lumber. All these thin epoxy products and pastes are pretty much the same. I always bought based on price from a reputable company. If time is taken to really soak the wood the epoxy works very well and holds paint. But it's easy to use $20 in epoxy product to save a $10 piece of wood.

Thanks Guys...

Metcalf: I'm not sure if dust will be an issue thru the Vents once installed properly. The larger Fan-Tastic Fan seems to have a good seal to keep water & dust out. Not sure about the Solar Fan, but plan to leave it on EXHAUST most of the time while driving. Hopefully creating a positive outward airflow & not allowing dust to enter. We'll see.... I Guess. In Theory!

Dzzz: Getting lighter all the time! Hopefully we can remember how it all goes back together, it's beginning ot look like a longer project than I had originally plan. When it's done.... It 'll be ready for another 40 years.

Worked on completing the 12v & 110v wiring today in the upper half. I also have a custom aluminum/stainless steel roof that I fab'ed up a few weeks ago ready to rough install. Waiting on the Spray-Foam Insulation Guy to fit me in.... After he's done, I can install the furnature grade Maple Plywood interior panels & hang LED Lights.

It'll be months.... Stay tuned!

Lunch?

I wasn't sure when we might get hungry & break for lunch. Coffee on demand also for the crew...:coffeedrink:
All of those goods we're one shelf up when the floor came/fell out... No Causalities &/or pasta was harmed during this renovation!

Your doing a great job , those Alaskans are built like tanks I have a mid 70's 8' It was in pretty good shape except for some severe hail damage to roof.I fixed the dents the coated with white herculiner It deadens all roof noise and really seals against any possible roof leak. Hard to keep clean though.

vhram....

I'm actually planning on using a bedliner product on the Lower Section where it contacts the wheel wells on occasion. I considered doing the roof, but was worried about the dirt as you mentioned. Any issues getting the Herculiner to adhere to the aluminum?

Thanks for the vote of confidence....
