1975 FJ40 owner, new to Expedition Portal

I just found and joined this "family" of overlanders. We love to travel, and have the last 35 years on a Harley, pulling a trailer. We used to camp a lot, but as we got older we migrated to motel/hotels for the joy of a soft bed and a hot private shower every night. Time was also a factor, as we traveled long distance, from NC to the West Coast and the Rockies. Been to Yellowstone and Glacier 5 times and never get tired of the place.
We have owned a 1975 FJ 40 since 1985, after I got out of the USCG, stationed in Kodiak, AK. That 40 is in a million pieces now, rusted and waiting on new sheet metal. Last year we found another 1975 40 and bought it. No rust and in good condition. I spent 1500 hours last year doing a complete resto. Hopefully, in two weeks I will be driving her again. That is the reason for joining this community, to get ideas on overlanding for the next few year' before our age prohibits us from doing crazy things.
This year we plan on Eastern Canada for the third time, but with a roof over our head and windshield wipers, something the Harley sorely lacked! We will make Newfoundland, and plan to camp and spend time in motels, as well. Doing 4 or 5 weeks for sure.
Next year the plan is to do Canada and Alaska for 90 days. Overlanding and motels as needed.
2023 we drove to Yellowknife in February, -40 F and Aurora's every night. Spent two weeks in Yellowknife driving on Ice Roads and some Backcountry, and then came home thru Jasper and Banff. Winter is a great time up there!
Looking forward to lots of travel and adventure, now that we are retired, and free to go when and where we want.
The following posts are photos from Yellowknife, NWT enjoy.

The 40 is still in the build phase, but here are a few photos of where I'm at. Little to no rust and original paint when I bought her. Upon sanding a portion of the hood and sides, I decided to stop all the "spider rust " under the paint and paint the entire 40. I'm glad I did. The photo of the windshield laying flat shows how the "Smoke and Tar" from 1970's cigs smoked, turned the paint brown! Like to see their lungs!

Welcome aboard. 40 seems to be in decent shape. Love the color!
Yep, no cancer, just some surface rust and spyder rust under 50 years of rock chips. That was the only reason to paint her. Going to pick her up this coming week and finish the under side with primer, paint and Lizard Skin. Attach the Gobi roof rack and add some LED lights. Then we are off to Newfoundland for a month.

Been out to Colo to pick up the 40. Some photos of where she is at, as I striped her down for the trip out and back of all unwanted weight, and it is a slow process to get her back together. Enjoy.

Beautiful 40. Pace ought to be similar to a HD pulling a trailer, but as you said, more comfortable. I haven’t done too many long distances on the couple of Harleys I’ve had, but definitely done some long drives in a 40 during Canadian winters here in BC. None of my 40s were as nice as yours, but my last one had the 2nd Aqualu body ever built on it, so was also rust free.

When we decided to travel with the 40, we looked at the space and the fuel range and said the same thing, it will be just like traveling on the Harley, but with heat, a windshield with wipers and doors! Got the Warn 8274 winch rebuilt this week and have the electronics to clean up before we give it a go. The Gobi roof rack should be built by May, and delivered, then time to ask some friends over!
Still tuning on the Holly Sniper EFI, so just some short drives around the area so far.
