1980 Geländewagen

I’m new here, I have been on some other sites for a while but I ran into something new, or old in this instance
I found a 1980 Geländewagen 4door diesel with a/c and a double roof
it has been setting for 10 years
She has all the papers of it being imported
(her husband bought new in Germany and imported it in 83)
I have been talking to the owner trying to buy it,
It’s in good unmolested condition with some surface rust on rockers and rust (base ball size) in rear quarter on driver’s side (is L H Drive)
My question is what is it worth? I don’t want to pay too much but she is a nice lady and I don’t want to take advantage of her ether

Not sure what it is worth but I really dig it and they are amazing off road machines...

any ball park on price? Im thinking 3-4k it was parked 10 years ago with out any problems
( i have known the owners for 5 years and he was wanting me to get it started, but got sick and passed away before we could get it going)
they said it was just parked one day and just wasent drivin for a few months, when they tried the battery was dead, so it sat for 9 more years
now his widow wants to sell it
Nether she or I know what it is worth.
So any help would be nice
Thanks RussK

Unfortunately, the best US website for the G is currently down due to the server being without power in NYC as a result of Sandy. When it comes back up, you will find a lot of good information there:

I'm in the Atlanta area, and have owned and driven a G since 1984. I'd be happy to help, and I have no personal interest in the truck.

Is it a 240GD or a 300GD? Which transmission? If it is a 1980 and has A/C, it has to be aftermarket; since factory A/C was not available in 1980.

If you want to contact me, drop me an email at: gwagen2000 [at] comcast [dot] net.

They are both great Forums and will have good information for you.
I'm in Atlanta also and would be happy to help, although I may develop a personal interest in the truck. ; )

the truck is worth more than 3-4g, if all that is wrong is what you stated. the issue here of course, being the lack of information and pictures. the rust spots sound traditional, and may not be indicative of something needing a major overhaul.

on the other hand, if restoration is new for you, tread lightly, nothing on these is cheap.

they are forums, neither one has a difficult user interface, just different. you will find a personality bias tho!

P3 does have a spectacular DIY section. you'll find yourself reading the primary contributors fixes even if they have nothing to do with your truck. he could have had a career doing repair manuals, and he has an awwwwesome set of tools.

zimm's right - Clugwagen (www.clubgwagen.com) also has some great DIY sections - fyi. I find the forum atmosphere here on expo and clubgwagen to be a great place to ask questions. You're welcome to also PM me if you want some assistance with appraisal...etc.

Welcome to the club!
