I found it in N.Y. The guy wants $4500 for it. It has high milage and a new head and timing chain. It also has a little bit of rust on hood and bottom of doors.

I was thinking I could put the camper on my Troopie. But I would have to cut the top off and the sides.

With the number of rusted out FJ40 around why would you do that? The parts that fall from rust are the bits you would be cutting off anyway.

Just get a 40 and stretch the frame, there are tons of threads on the web about stretching the FJ40 frame.

There is the unconfirmed thought that the 2WD frame rails in that age range are the same profile as the live axle 4WD frame rails (once all of the 2WD IFS bracketry is cut off). The IFS 4WD trucks are different and have less frame to axle clearance when doing an SAS. If this is correct then it means that you can still have reasonable up travel with a lower ride height.

There are leaf spring SAS kits out there, presumably they'll work on a 2WD frame as well. My 2WD truck looks to be the same as my LA 4WD truck in the critical areas, but I have not measured them.

Then you'll need a 4WD trans and transfer case. I would suggest avoiding any trans the is not a W or an R series as the others will be marginal in strength at best.

Finally, the rear will also need to go be lifted. I would strongly suggest going with the GM 63" long rear springs. Your kidneys will thank you later.
