only 30mpg? I always get over 50 on the highway in my 2003 Jetta, same engine but I added bigger injectors and a tune for a healthy bump in hp and tq, much more aero vehicle for sure but I'm suprised there's that much friction and aero loss

Considering this vanagon has the aerodynamics of a brick and probably weighs 1000 lbs more than your jetta, I think 30 MPG @ normal freeway speeds is a realistic estimate. Maybe 35MPG at 55 mph is possible.

I think if you expect any better than that you will be disappointed.

I would also expect this thing to be somewhat underpowered with a stock 90 hp 1.9 TDI.

"Converted"

This vehicle has been "converted to a camper". In other words they cut a hole in the roof for the pop top. Not original-hence the not original price. That having been said. I lust after a diesel syncro westy! I can confirm from a friend's identical van that 30 mpg is about right. If the transmission is noisy plan on replacement at a cost of 5-7k depending upon how strong you want to build it. Luckily the premier transmission builder in the country is in the same neighborhood as the van! (AA Transaxle in Monroe Washington)
