1990 Legacy found on c-list

Just curious, why are most of the off road subies on YouTube sounding like tin cans? They are doing some tough stuff but most the videos I'm referring to were posted by Northwest Off road. Maybe it's a mod or possibly they just removed the mufflers.

The beauty of Japanese cars is their ability to survive neglect and abuse. They continue to run long after they should have given up the ghost. Subaru is no different, they run and run and run. I would drive one from coast to coast without batting an eye.

As for the 'tin can' sound, I'm not too sure what you mean. I've always thought they sounded a bit like helicopters.

That should have the 2.2l EJ22 Engine. There are some who hold this as the most reliable subi ever. If the car has been taken care of it should be good to go. I believe this model is only AWD not 4wd, and so does not have low range. If it looks good, get it and drive......:)

I'm fairly sure 99% of Subaru enthusiasts hold the EJ22 as the most reliable engine ever. ESPECIALLY on the older Legacys, because those engines are non-interference, which means if you mess up the installation of your timing belt, or it blows while you're driving (highly unlikely), the engine is fine! No bent valves, just slap a new timing belt on and keep going!

As a testament to how awesome these engines are, I recently hydrolocked my EJ18 in my 1993 Impreza, bought a 1991 Legacy off cragislist, swapped the engine into my car, and have been enjoying the increased horses with no issues ever since (5k miles so far)!

Just a heads up, this guy buys and sells alot of cars. Don't let him give you some story about it being his aunts. That aside I've had a few early 90s Subarus and loved them.

1st gen Legacies (1990-94) have a great reputation. The problematic Legacies were the 2nd gens (1995-1999) with the 2.5. Remember that the Outback wasn't made until the 2nd gen so the 1st gens were not really intended for off-pavement use, even with AWD. Clearance is low and tires were small. But as a DD, a 1st gen Legacy would be outstanding. Personally, I would actually prefer a 1st gen to a 2nd gen, even though I think the 2nd gen looks better, just because of the low-maintenance 2.2 motor.
