From what I can see just the L sides.

Did you check out machine shop pros out of Chatsworth? Somewhat local and easier to deal with if any issues.

Help me understand what I'm looking at. Why is that edge of the cylinder opening of the head gasket bent like that? How does a cracked head happen, and how did it result in that bend?

So are those cracks considered bad between the valves on these heads? I used to do A LOT of air-cooled VW work, and those aren't horrible for them.

I don't know if its different for air-cooled cars, but everything i've ever been told has said that cracks=pretty much trashed head. Sometimes you can get a machine shop to weld it back or something, but I would prefer to just get a new one.

We never found a problem with leak-down issues, or valve seat issues, so still don't see the issue.

Well replace the cracked heads with the one from :http://www.ebay.com/itm/35113062098...38.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&rmvSB=true
and VICTOR REINZ 5765 head gasket set.
