1993 work Jeep build

Well, here it is. I finally have another 4x4. My father in law just gave me his 1993 Jeep Cherokee, bone stock, but in dire neglect. It has a little surface rust, and a lot of updating needed. So far I have done an extensive look over and I’ve found....
-Needs new headliner, as the roof rack bars were leaking water and it’s moldy
-Needs a full tune up
-valve cover gasket
-lots of bushings in the suspension, when I go over a bump it feels like the axles are going in opposite directions, so I’m starting with sway bars, and track bar.
-handles on 2 our if 4 doors don’t operate well or at all.
-All springs and shocks are done.
-all tires are done, in front are 205/75/15, back are 235/75/15
-many interior lights don’t work
-stereo only works when headlights are turned on.
-front right end accident. Might just be limited to the bumper are quarter panels, but we’ll see.
-and the lust goes on. But it’s free...so here we go!

Had some battery issues so I installed a battery from my solar setup on my trailer. It’s 4 years old but it’s been on a trickle charger, so here’s hoping.

And installed some cup holders.

So now we are up to date. Today I changed the spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, and air filter.

This thing looked bad. Multiple had build up so bad they were touching.

New plugs! I went with Bosch Platinum pre-gapped plugs for ease, and I’ve heard good things.

Next is changing the interior lights to LED, an oil change, and a fuel filter. Then come cleaning off all the rust, painting those spots, and building a lumber rack. I’m a furniture builder and metal fabricator, so this is basically top of my list. I wanted to wait until I bought my tube bender but my wife is due with our first baby in a week, so no big tool purchases soon.

Thanks! I’m excited to make more progress! This old suspension and steering is so swirly. Off the the junk yard tomorrow, and ordering some bushings and LED’s tomorrow!

New parts in the way. Sway bar and track bar bushings, sway bar end links, LED lights, and a bunch of steel for my new rack I’ll be working on. Pick are on the way. Dropped off a 12ft conference table a few days ago, and a nice desk is being picked up tomorrow. Thanks clients for money to buy parts!!

Headliner came off today to get ready for the roof rack and new fabric. More to follow.

Taking this thing off rained down nasty stuff and left my hands and arms itching. Remember if any of you do this in the future to wear gloves and long sleeves.

Got some steel at the yard for the mounting brackets. It’s so nice having 7’ sections fit inside this XJ. No straps, just throw them in and get going. This rack will be built out of 1.5”x1/8” for the mounting platforms, and 1x1x.095” for the structure. With the amount of cross bracing, this will be ample for what it will hold. I’m hoping to fully TIG weld the entire thing and have it Powdercoated in a nice black to fit my stormtrooper motif.

Well it was pouring in Portland today, so I got all the steel cut for my rack surround and drilled all the holes for the mounts. I also painted all the mounts for the interior , and did some interior work. First was new hatch struts, so I could lose the 2x4 mod, and I put up some sound deadened on the roof.

I found a good product on Amazon for cheap, so that’s what I used. About 10 sq ft for the entire roof.

I found a few rust spots that I’ll need to deal with, and hopefully I’ll have some cooler stuff to post soon. Cheers

Anybody exactly how much and where I will need to trim to fit some 31x10.5’s on my stock ride height? I’m trying to get some lift shackles and spacers for about 1.75” if lift. I bought the tires bc I couldn’t pass them up. 5 Wild Country 31x10.5x15 for $250 on Craigslist. Cheers

They’ll fit but on full compression you’ll be rubbing/peeling off the rear flares. The knuckles up front have steering stops, add a washer or two to keep the fronts from rubbing on full lock. Probably best (when budget allows) to get new 2-3” lift springs and shocks all around instead of spacers and shackles.

Thanks! Add washers to the steering stops? And ya, my wife is due with our first baby tomorrow, so budget will be hard for a little while. However, do you guys prefer IRO or Rusty’s? They are right around $500 for either, for full new rear leaf springs, front could and shocks. Any advise is appreciated
