1994 Ford Explorer Build

One thing I really love about this truck is I can pretty much hop in it at any time and hit the dirt. Headed up into the hills with my son yesterday for a little fun.

My transmission was not pumped after Baja. It got hot on me and boiled over (common A4LD issue). I've also been dealing with it slipping every morning when it's cold (another common A4LD issue). Threw in a new filter, a big Hayden trans cooler meant for a Class A RV towing 10,000, pounds, and installed in a drain plug so that I can keep the fluid fresh in the future. Trans is happy now, cold slippage issue is gone, shifts nice and solid. Also threw on a spare black grill, and put some little daytime runner leds in the valance. Got about a 200 mile dirt adventure planned for this weekend, good times!

One of the things I hated about my old first gen. I eventually did the 700r4 conversion on mine and never had another issue (until I broke the torque converter playing in the mud). Another item to keep an eye on is the governor. Pull the vacuum line off it every time you are under there dropping the fluid and check to see if there is any fluid in the line. If there is any sign of fluid change out the governor.

Your explorer is really close to how I wanted to build my old one. Unfortunately I drove it into the ground before I had the money to build it. Today I look back and regret ever parting it out.

Thanks, for the words of wisdom, I have heard about the governor issue also! I am really just trying to keep this drivetrain together until I have the time to do a 5.3/4L80 swap

Really pumped on this new drop center hood from McNeil Racing. Should give it a great look and keep it OG!

Well, my weekend run turned into a day trip after my buddy broke his rear shock mount. Truck did great, but this trip really made me want to cage it. The body is just rattling around so bad!

I love this build! 1st gen explorers are so underrated. Finding a clean one is pretty tough.

They definitely are, don't let the secret out!

Little tough to see, but I finally got the Currie spring plates installed, so no more funky stock lower shock mount and long U-bolts. Also did some bedside supports to the rear lower wheel well to push them out about 3" and make them nice & solid.

Solid day run with my son. Finally got to run with a Raptor. As expected he got me in the flats, but couldn't hang in the big stuff. Nothing is set in stone, but I got an offer on the truck that I am really considering. I have mixed emotions about it. I love this thing, but it's only a bunch of metal and parts, I could always build another one!
