1994 Land Cruiser

I'm looking at a 94 Cruiser and on the rear it says "full time 4wd" Is that true or can it be run in 2wd to save fuel on the highway. I will be driving this from New Hampshire to the midwest this fall on a bird hunting excursion. I'm thinking of pulling out both rows of seats and building a kitchen, sleeping and drawer system in the back while still leaving room for a kennel.

So can this run 2wd?

Not in stock form. We do have a part time kit available, but the fuel mileage is not that significant. I would not do the kit just for that. What it does save is wear on the front end.

Leave it be. It's a great system with many millions of miles under it with all the rigs that use it.

If you are concerned about fuel mileage, a cruiser may not be in your future. Beside that, the are fantastic well built trucks.

You will easily spend more on the 2wd kit and labor than you will save on gas unless you drive it for a long long time.

Cloth seats, no lockers (if that's important to you), low miles (Wow on the low miles). NY truck - how's the rust? Hard to tell from pics, but that would reduce price too. Ding in the front bumper. A 76K engine is worth something if she's been well maintained. Service records? You can talk them down because of age. At 76K miles it probably hasn't had the front birfs done - that's $1500 at a shop minimum. Valve cover may be getting old. Head gasket is the original design, but probably not an issue because of the low miles. Tire shape. Those go for around $200 each. Baseline all the fluids on an older truck, etc. etc.

Half what they're asking at best. It's still a gas guzzling 16 year old truck that just isn't worth $11K in today's market. Low miles is worth something, but other than that, she's a basic stock cruiser that sold for around $40-42K in 1994 w/o lockers or leather. A fully loaded, locked factory leather, etc. cruiser in '94 sold for $45K. I bought one that way in '94. :wings:

Shoot - I drive a Miata as a DD these days that pays for itself over gas in the beast.

I'll have to agree. The mileage is excellent, but not $12k excellent. Maybe 7k if it has maintenance records, as it is still a 16 year old vehicle. Also agree to keep the AWD system, its proven and for most people one of the reasons that they look at Land Cruisers.

I bought my '93 Land Cruiser in February, with 180k miles, leather, lockers, and maintenance records back to 2000 for $8500, and I know I overpaid for it (but I love it). Average of 13mpg with 33" tires.

My buddy just sold his 1994 with 124K, OME 850/863, 285 BFG muds and exceptionally clean for 6,500. I would put the one you are looking at in the 8500ish range, tops.

Just an FYI-- 8-10% of all "low mileage" vehicles over 10 years old are ODOMETER rollbacks according to stats from NHTSB.

imho- unless you know the seller and can verify the miles---i wouldnt buy that this is actually as low as claimed.

This Cruiser spent a good portion of its life in The Hamptons. That means it spent it's life within 1-2 miles of the Atlantic. Even if it was garaged, I highly doubt it's clean enough to constitute that price.

I don't worry about mileage on 80 series. I would worry about Maint. and rust. I bought my lx450 for $4,500 bone stock with factory lockers and 140k. I have since built it and did the Maint. on it which almost cost me the price of the truck. With that being said I would lurk here and on Ih8mud.com and find yourself a mildly built 80 with higher mileage but more maint. and mods. and save alot of coin, Just my .02 though. goodluck.

It says it was a CA vehicle originally. How long it was out east would probably determine the amount of rust if any. I don't think it is that unreasonable of a price. Low mileage rigs are hard to find. A friend just sold an 89 FJ62 with 42k on it for 13k.

On the part time kit, I converted one of my 80s years ago and later converted it back. I didn't like the change in handling. The front end always felt light and it pushed more in the corners. The mileage gain was not much, maybe 1 mpg tops? I think most of the time I was looking at .5-.75 gain and who knows if it was really a gain at all because of differences in fuel, location, and driving. Then again it could have been much more of a gain and I didn't realize it because of the change in fuel, location, and driving.
